Subject: Pianocorder Volume

A couple of people have written asking about how to reduce the volume of the Piancorder.

My solution is that I'm usually in another part of the house when it is playing. The volume is perfect in the kitchen, dinning room, bedroom, etc. :o)

It's always a challenge with solenoid playing systems to get them to play as softly as you might like, without notes dropping out completely.
The Pianocorder, being one of the earliest systems, is probably harder to tone down that some of the newer outrageously expensive systems.

I have found a solution that works very well on one of my uprights that is a very live piano to start with. It has extremely easy action and will play quite loudly with little encouragement. I've found that I can tone it down a great deal by shimming the soft pedal. I do not use the soft pedal solenoid at all in the system, but instead have a thick shim I place in the soft pedal mechanism which raises the soft rail even further than normal, for use with the Pianocorder. It works great!

Additional reduction of volume, if necessary, can be achieved by draping the instrument with fabric, such as blankets, comforters, or a custom dampening cover.

Of course having the piano in a draped, carpeted and heavily furnished room will also help absord a lot of the sound.
