When the piano "skips" does the "Fine Tuning" lamp flicker?

That indicates loss of synchronism in the playback system and will shut off signals to the pedals and any notes played until sync is regained.

Have you exercised the record/playback button? There is a switch in the playback circuitry which can corrode sufficiently to cause loss of signals from the playback head. (It's very doubtful that anything is wrong with the head itself.)
