This ain't gonna work.

The tape player does more than move the tape. There is a very high gain amplifier in the path from tape head to the playback board which provides a 12-volt square wave signal for coupling data from the tape via an optical isolator on the playback board. That isolator is necessary for safety reasons because the playback logic board is at -85 volts with respect to house ground.
