Howdy Jim,

Crazy making isn't it.

Starting with the obvious, have you tried cleaning the tape heads, capstan and roller?

Have you tried several tapes to see if it's a defective tape?

Clean the tape heads, roller and capstan with 97% alchohol. 4oz bottle available at drug store. Dampen cue tip, squeeze out excess moisture, so nothing drips or runs down into the machine. With power off, press play to move heads in position for easier access.

Wipe heads with cue tip, you should get brown oxide residue, dry and polish with dry cue-tip.

Depress play and pause, turn on power. Hold damp cue-tip against capstand.

Release pause, hold damp cue tip against right side of rubber roller just where it's turning past the capstand. Use both hands if necessary to hold the cue tip firmly against the roller. Do not let it get dragged around and go thru the capstand. Move cue tip up and down side of roller until all the brown oxide is removed. This should only take about 10 seconds.

Apply dry cue tip to roller, briefly. (Careful, don't let it get dragged around to the capstand. If it does, just press pause, then shut off power and regroup.)

Press pause again. Use damp cue tip on capstand again, then dry cue tip briefly.

Shut off power

Make sure all parts are free of cotton from the cuetips.

Press stop.

Done.

Try tape deck again. When it works, say Eureka. If it doesn't work, resist temptation to rip it from the piano and stomp on it.

Ok if this does not work, let me know, I have another thing you can try.
