Some sparking at power-on is normal; it's due to the power supply initially drawing about 8 Amps to fill those large electrolytic capacitors. At some point, Superscope/Marantz did address this problem with an anti-spark kit which moved the actual switching to a relay, using the power switch on the deck to close a low voltage 24 Volt circuit to activate the relay. I have one of these anti-spark boards if you're interested.

An alternative solution would be to use the power supply dongle included with your wireless kit to ensure the Pianocorder is always on, then plug it into a switched wall outlet or one of those appliance remote controls available at hardware stores and home centers (make sure to use one designed for use with appliances, not lamps).
