On the MyUO Discussion Boards, Greywolfe (Online Community Coordinator) explained the new house security changes coming with AoS.
(Note: Although some the OSI boards allow any visitor to read, in order to read or post in most of the official Ultima Online message boards you’ll need to be logged into the forums. Don’t have an account, yet? Go here to register!)
House keys are indeed going away. Security settings, however, will be changing with respect to houses and containers. There are four levels of "friendship" to the house for all characters and other "mobiles" such as pets. The friendship levels are as follows:
1. Owner. Any player character on the account owning the house has house ownership privileges
2. Co-owner: characters from other accounts specifically designated as co-owners.
3. Friend: essentially the same as the "friend" that currently exists
4. Stranger: any character that does not fall into one of the categories above.
Access to public houses is essentially the same following Age of Shadows as it is now. Private houses disallow any "stranger" from accessing the house.
All doors, teleporters, and secure containers have the following levels:
1. Owner Only -- only a house owner can access the item. (Open a door, open a secure container, teleport using a teleporter.)
2. Co-Owners -- only the house owner and co-owners can access the item
3. Friends -- only friends, co-owners, and owners can access the item.
4. Anyone -- anyone who has access to the house has access to the item.
With these levels of access, you should be able to maintain the degree of security that you feel comfortable with.
