Subject: What....a....day. Virus (actually - Worm) update...PLEASE READ!

Wheeeeeewwww.....What a fricking HASTLE!! Here's how it went and what you should be aware of.
Last night, just before bed, I checked my Outlook email. There was an email from a "feather..(something)..wood" ...no, I'm sure not you feather!...I opened it and there was no text, no message. There was an attachment, but I NEVER open attachments from those I don't know. I was wondering what the heck it was all about, so I just did a "reply" asking who they were and why I should consider opening their attachment. As I was doing this my computer was chattering up a storm. I noticed it, but didn't think too much about it. I shut down and went to bed. This morning I get on to check my mail and I have a MESS!!! Straaaange emails and about 15 POST MASTER "could not deliver" type emails. Anyway, looooong story short, I get on IM with carol and mention this and she reminded me of the "klez" worm. I downloaded the "cleaning" tool and it found several infected files, which it deleted. I then spent 5 hours cleaning, Installing Norton's Anti Virus with updates and rechecking everything. I am now Virus free (UNDETECTED!) . In one sense anyway. SO --- Anyone that hasn't updated their virus protection Please do so now! I've talked to several people today from around the country and this thing is everywhere!!!! I will be updating my virus protection weekly from now on....what.....a.....day. VERY VERY sorry if any of you got those phantom emails from me...if so, please use the tool in carol's post below to clean it and update your virus protection asap!

Teegor got an odd blank email from me. I also got a couple of those Post Master could not deliver messages. BUT, I am virus free. We have Norton and we did the Klez fix and it detected nothing. Den thinks it possible that some of the email servers are infected. I hope the worst is over.

[> It is a strange and evil virus. -- toosh, 02:04:53 05/07/02 Tue (dhcp024-209-033-060.neo.rr.com/24.209.33.60)

let me try to explain in layman's terms(since that's all I know, lol)...

When you get one of these emails....it is usually NOT from who it says in the email. When you get the full "headers"....or the "properties" you will see something that says, "return path" and that is who the email is actually from. With this virus it is usually different than the person that sent it......very weird! It's verrrrry frustrating, but keep in mind that the person that sent it has not done anything malicously....most of the time they don't know anything about it until they're deluged with stuff like what Terry went thru!! Good luck!.....Carol

[> Terry tried shooting the interferon into his computer but it was hard to get the needle through the plastic.... -- Junobear, 07:07:36 05/08/02 Wed (216-220-250-121.midmaine.com/216.220.250.121)

Something had to be done -- the hard drive was stage III bridging fibrosis and internet links were loading slow. Searching the help files of Norton Anti-Virus, no listings were found for 'mother board fog' or 'memory fatigue,' but the machine was obviously starting to be symptomatic.

Terry remembered cutting himself making dinner and bleeding on the keyboard. Guilt coursed through his soul as he realized he may have transmitted the virus to his beloved Dell.

Fortunately, Dell was already seeing a specialist, Dr. McTooshic, who diagnosed the problem as HCV [Hepatitis Computer Virus] and recommended treatment. But first, the unfortunate machine was forced to be biopsied.

Dr. McTooshic laid Dell on her side and attempted to reassure her. "It won't hurt a bit. Versed is not necessary. A little shot of Novacaine and its all over in an instant." Dr. McTooshic approached the machine with a large instrument resembling a cross between a gun and an ice pick, "Somebody bled on her keyboard. Yah, right. She's an IV drug user for sure about to pay the wages of her sin..." With an evil grin, Dr. McTooshic shoved the instrument deep into the hard drive. The sound card was definitely working. Dell squealed and cursed, emitting 'Jungle Sounds...'

Dr. McTooshic explained that several treatment options were available -- PC-cillin and several versions of Norton. Because Dell's version of the virus was 1b and many files appeared to be infected, state of the art treatment by Norton was necessary. Norton 'Commitment to Care' agreed to help with treatment costs allowing Dell access to download its newest pegylated program.

The first scan was rough. Dell's temperature rose and she shook and shivered and what was left of her memory suffered a pounder, but Dr. McTooshic refused to allow access to download the Vicodin plugin. By the third scan, the experience seemed a bit more bearable and soon, the hard drive was undetected...

Dell crawled across the finish line celebrating the last and final scan. We will know in six months if she's a sustained responder.
