I led my jet black TB stallion out to the saddling area and groomed him well. I tacked him up in full eventing gear and mounted. I headed him towards the 2nd Xcountry course at my stables, Castlereagh stables. I warmed him up, jogging him around the start of the course, until he was ready to go. I started my timer and we sprung into action. We galloped towards the first fence, I collected him and slowed him in time to make a safe jump. We easily cleared the 4’ jump and we cantered onward…. After the next 10 fences we were moving towards the 2nd last fence, a simple wall with a steep ditch on the other side. I knew what was coming and so I slowed him down to the right speed. As he lunged into the air I gave him heaps of rein and lent backwards to give him room to move. We landed heavily but sturdyly, Memento having no problem with the sudden ditch. I collected the reins and urged him onwards. He was starting to tire, but I knew he had more than enough left in him to jump 50 more fences. I kicked him on and when the last jump was in sight slowed him a little. He took off a little early but the fence was simple and we cleared it easily still. I stopped my watch but kept Memento moving. I brought him down to a trot and for the next few mins kept him at this speed. I then pulled him up and gave him a pat. Our time was pretty good but I knew we had the potential to do a lot better. Still, I praised him and squeezed him gently with my legs. He moved into a smooth easygoing walk and I let him stretch his neck out. We slowly walked back to the stableyard where I dismounted, unsaddled and hosed him down. I then fed him a treat, he had more than earnt and turned him out in his regular paddock for a graze.
