After saddling up Eagle, I told Julia to lead him outside. She did. After a month of training Eagle, he was trotting over poles with a ruder, cantering under saddle, and jumping 1' jumps (Must I say?) with a rider. Julia looked at me quietly.
"Now," I said advancing over to her, taking the reins, "Get on Eagle."
"What?!?" she squawked.
"We have been training him, just for you."
She smiled and got on slowly. He just stood there like it was nothing.
"This is great!" She adjusted her posture and asked him to walk. He did. Then a trot. He did. Finally a canter. He started on the right lead and everything. I was watching the whole time. When she pulled him down to a walk, I set up poles, and then some small 1' jumps.
"Okay, walk him over the poles, and around the jumps." I instructed. With sharp eyes, I said "Thumbs up, heels down!"
She again corrected her posture. I was so proud of her! She had started as a western rider, and easily switched over to English.
"Okay, now bring him back and do the same thing, only trotting."
As she did what she was told, I picked up the poles and set them up in the "jump poles" room.
"Mom! Why did you do that?"
"Cause we're going to go over those jumps." I pointed to the jumps and she looked at me like I was an alien!
"No, no, and another no! Do you KNOW how dangerous that could be on an untrained horse?!?!"
"Who said he's untrained?"
Julia gasped and looked at Eagle. She did a wide circle, and asked him to canter once again. He did, and headed straight for the jumps. He cleared all of them with about four feet to spare!
"Great! Now, I want to go a little higher."
