I gave her a groom, saddled her with a regular saddle (without stirrup leathers and irons) and a regular girth. She barely flinched as it did up the girth and I then led her to the schooling ring. I lunged her in all her gear as a warm up and then at all gaits, making sure she had no problem with the saddle. I called in Alice, my young jockey tried to once again back her. The first time Penny moved away, so Alice slipped off. Alice pulled herself on again, this time penny stood still, well behaved. Alice lay there, her belly over the saddle seat for a few mins, until Penny looked relaxed. I then asked Penny (who was still on the lunge line) to walk forward, she was a little resistant as first but then tentatively took a step forward. When she realised that Alice wasn’t anything more than some more weight, she began to walk naturally as she normally did. I halted her and Alice dismounted. I then got Alice to mount Penny and sit in the saddle as if she was going to ride her. Alice did this easily (with assistance from a milk crate!) and sat lightly in the saddle. Penny tossed her head, but then calmed down again, and when I asked her to walk forwards, she did so, cautiously. I walked them for around 5 mins both clockwise and counter clockwise when I halted Penny. Alice dismounted gently and I added the stirrup leathers and irons to the saddle. I then worked her t all gaits with these swinging around her sides, she occasionally sped up slightly if the stirrup touched her belly, but would then return to the proper gaits in a few strides time. I was proud at how well she had adjusted to both the stirrups and a rider. I cooled her down, untacked her, gave her a carrot and turned her out for the afternoon.
