Subject: Breaking Temptress to Tack! Author: Helen [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 10:42:18 10/04/02 Fri Helen walked into the barn and opened a stall door. Inside was her 2 y/o Friesian filly, Temptress. The Crafty filly sidled out of the door into the aisle giving Helen a good nip as she passed, for which she received a sharp pop on the nose. Temptress tossed her head and stamped. Helen smiled and Clipped her in crossties. Temptress shifted and pranced as Helen groomed her. She had been taught the basics of handling and was ready to be broken to tack. Helen called into the tack room “hey Jacob”. Jacob, who was cleaning his dressage saddle, poked his head out the door “yeah”. “Do you want to help me with Temptress?”. “Yeah OK I’ll get the all-purpose saddle.” “OK! Meet you out in the dressage arena” Helen scooped up a lung line and led Temptress out to the arena. The practically evil filly bucked and pranced, nipping at Helen’s shoulder, or more correctly trying to bite it off. Helen gave her a sharp pop on the shoulder. Temptress tossed her head and stalked sulkily after Helen. Helen led her into the middle of the arena and attached the lunge line to Temptress’s halter. Helen lunged her both ways, putting her through all of her paces. Temptress was a very interesting filly. When she was learning something new she was very attentive and obedient, but as soon as she could do it well (within 2-3 training sessions) she would get bored and started to play around and be her usual evil, cheeky and clever self again. Helen stopped thinking about this and paid more attention to Temptress. When the feisty filly was warmed up Helen led her over to the edge of the arena and halted her. Jacob brought over the saddle pad and let temptress sniff it. She casually snuffled ate it and then let Jacob set it gently on her back. She didn’t move and looked extremely bored. This time Jacob held Temptress and Helen lifted the saddle up and lowered it onto the Friesians smooth level back. Temptress gave an indignant buck and then stood still while Helen tightened the girth. Temptress listened attentively to Helen’s commands as she lunged her at walk, trot & Canter in both directions. Temptress was happy to have something new to do! She had been getting bored. After 10 minutes Helen halted Temptress and took off her halter. She slipped the reins of the new bridle over the athletic filly’s head and began to slide the bit into Temptress’s mouth. Temptress locked her jaw and wouldn’t open up. Helen smiled slightly and stuck her thumb into the angry filly’s mouth behind her teeth. Temptress’s eyes looked startled and she opened up and accepted the bit. She champed and wiggled her tongue around in a funny way that made Helen and Jacob grin. Helen attached the lung line to the bridle this time and began to lunge her. Temptress tossed her head and continued to chomp on the bit as she was lunged. After about 15 more minutes, Helen was satisfied and led Temptress back into the barn. Helen gave her a carrot and got the back of her head bitten at in return. She grinned again and bathed Temptress before putting her away :-)!!
