Susan walked out to the paddock and opened the gate. She whistled sharply, the sound cutting through the silent morning. Pride lifted his elegantly sculpted head and whinnied. He galloped over, mane and tail flying out behind him, as he raced to her. He stopped in front of her and nuzzled her gently. “Hey, Pride. Are you feeling ready for some jumping?” she cooed. He snorted eagerly as she led him to the barn and hooked him in crossties. He danced about as she groomed his glossy bay coat and picked his feet. He nipped playfully at the jumping saddle as she laid it on his back. She laughed and tightened the girth. Pride accepted the bit ans she quickly buckled the bridle. Strapping on her helmet, she led the stallion out to the jumping ring and swung into the saddle. Pride walked forward smoothly, relaxed and soft. He seemed happy to be back with Susan. She warmed him up and then cantered a courtesy circle. She balanced Pride and pushed him swiftly toward the first jump. Back arched, eyes looking ahead, and heels shoved down, Susan moved him towards the first jump. She kept her legs pressed evenly against his sides and then squeezed as they came to the jump. He bunched his powerful muscles and soared over the 3’ spread! Susan settled back into the saddle and pushed Pride to the wishing well. He sprang over it and then landed. He was chewing the bit and rounding his back, focusing on the course. Susan moved him over the coop, oxer, liverpool, and rolltop and then they headed for the triple combination. Pride tucked his legs up as he soared over the first fence. As they landed, Susan shortened his stride and felt himbunch his muscles before bouncing over the second. They sprang over the last part of the combination and then slowed to a halt. “Good boy!” Susan praised. She started him toward the trail and then saw Suzie standing by the rail, holding Kiss’s reins. “Suzie, do you want to take Kiss out on the trails with me and Pride? I’m just gonna cool him out and I think Kiss would enjoy it.” Susan said. The 14 y/o’s smile brightened and she mounted the 15.2 Morgan mare. The two started down the trail together. “How did Kiss go in saddleseat?” Susan asked. “Great! She has smooth movements but she is a little reluctant. She likes english better.” Suzie replied, with a sigh. “You miss King, don’t you?” Susan said sympathetically. “Yeah, I do. I miss the smooth feel of a TW and the awesome rides we always had. But, he just wasn’t enough of a challenge. He would have made a good lesson horse.” Suzie said. Susan looked thoughtful. “Do you want to ride with me tomorrow? You can ride Gent. I’m working with this guy on saddleseat.” She said, patting Pride’s neck. “Sure, that would be awesome!” the girl replied happily. The two riders continued down the trail :-)
