Susan tightened Magic’s girth and he turned to sniff the new saddle. Today he was going to begin his jumping training. Susan slipped a jumping bridle onto Magic. He snorted but accepted the bit cautiously. Susan hooked the lunge line to his bridle and led him out to the jumping arena. She started him walking on a circle and clucked gently to get him to step out at his walk. He responded like the well trained horse he was. Susan walked him for a few minutes and then flicked the lunge whip and clucked. Magic trotted perkily forward, his neck elegantly arched. Susan trotted him and then clucked. The Friesian stallion cantered smoothly forward. After lunging him at these three gaits both ways, Susan set up trotting poles. Magic pranced over them easily a few times and then watched curiously as Susan set up a small crossrail 6” crossrail. Magic snorted as he trotted toward it but high stepped over it. Susan raised it to 1’ and clucked gently. Magic cantered toward it and refused at the foot of the crossrail. Susan clucked and flicked the lunge whip. He bounced over it lightly and landed on the other side. Susan took him over it a few more times and then switched directions. He was enjoying jumping! Susan praised him and then led him to the barn. She untacked him and gave him a long carrot with greens! Then she walked over to her yearling, Splash’s, stall. The colt nuzzled her gently and then nipped at her pocket. She slipped him a sugar cube and clipped the lead shank to him. She brushed his glossy coat and led him out to the ring, english saddle tucked under her arm. She clipped a lunge line to him and puts him through his gaits. Then she halted him and smiled. He was willing and responsive on the lunge line and hoped once she broke him to a rider he would be the same. Today, she was going to introduce him to a saddle. She laid the saddle pad on his back. He sidestepped and turned to look at it. He sniffed it curiously and when it seemed to pose no threat, he relaxed. Susan waited a few minutes before laying the saddle on his back. He jerked up his head in surprise and whirled around to look at the saddle. He snorted and pranced beneath it for about 5 minutes but Susan gave him a sugar cube and rubbed him gently, slowly relaxing him. After 20 minutes of walking with the saddle sitting on his back, Splash was ready for the girth. Susan tightened it slowly, hole by hole. Splash nipped at her arm and tossed his head. Once the girth was tightened, Susan started him on a circle. He bucked and tossed until he realized he couldn’t get rid of the saddle. Then he settled into a smooth trot, ignoring the saddle. Susan trotted and cantered him with the saddle before putting him away.
AFTER 3 WEEKS OF WORKING WITH THE SADDLE…Splash accepted it willingly each training session and was ready to be introduced to the bridle!
