Helen walked into the barn and looked around. The cool shade of the clean swept barn was relieving after the bright sunshine outside. Helen picked up a lead line and walked up the aisle to one of the roomy box stalls. She slid back the door and stepped inside. Her new TB filly, Cat Burgler, was standing munching her hay. “C’mon girl” Helen cooed softly as she clipped the lead rope onto Cat’s halter. The lanky black fill followed her willingly out of the stall and into the aisle where Helen put her in crossties and then walked to the tack room to get her tack.
When Helen walked back out of the tack room. Jess(Jessica), Helen’s 15 y/o daughter, was standing petting the new filly. “ She’s gorgeous” Jess said, rubbing the filly’s neck affectionately. Jess helped Helen tack up and then went to pet her mom’s foal, Temptress. Helen led Cat out to the exercise arena and stood her beside the mounting block. She adjusted her stirrups and tightened the girth. Cat danced around in excitement and gave a small buck. “Steady girl” Said Helen softly. She lined Cat up with the mounting block and swung up. The 16.2hh filly shifted under Helen and walked on. Cat had a naturally long striding walk that promised swinging gaits when Helen put her through her paces. Cat was relatively calm undersaddle, though she still danced about a good deal. After a few minutes of walking in both directions Helen gave a strong squeeze with both legs and sat deep in the saddle. Cat willingly moved into a long swinging trot. Helen posted lightly as the big filly’s long legs carried horse and rider around the ring. Helen worked on a few walk trot/trot walk transitions for about 20 minutes. After she was satisfied (and she was VERY satisfied) with Cat’s walk and trot, she moved her into a more energetic trot. Helen sat to the filly’s smooth strides as she collected herself. Then she slid her outside leg back and asked for a canter. Cat had not done much work at canter, but Helen was confident enough with her new filly to give it a try. Cat tossed her head, nickered and dashed across the arena. “whoa girl” Helen said, sitting and slowing cat to a trot “its OK just settle down”. After settling Cat down she tried again, this time more firmly. Cat still tossed her head, but then moved into an easy canter. Helen took her through a couple of 20 meter circles before bringing Cat to a walk. Helen cooled her out and then slid to the ground. As she loosened the girth and pulled up the stirrups jess came running out of the lounge in the barn and over to her mother. “How was she” Jess asked eagerly “I watched from the lounge I see she has really good gaits”. “Yep” Helen replied “she has excellent gaits and once she is trained up a bit will make a wonderful 3-day-eventer”. “Wahoo” jess said, jumping up and down. She loved eventing and was ecstatic to have a new yearling that she could help train as an eventer. At this point Helen’s other daughter, Suzie, came out of the barn and walked over to Helen and Jess “ did she do well?” Suzie asked. She was not as enthusiastic about English riding as she was about saddleseat, but Helen was teaching her to ride English and she was enjoying it. Helen led Cat back to the barn and clipped her in crossties. “Can we groom her?” asked the girls as they walked into the barn. “Sure, she can get used to you” said Helen. The 2 girls set 2 work grooming and bathing the athletic filly, while Helen went to the office to work out some training schedules.
When Helen had finished working out the training schedules she walked out of the office and over to the mare barn. She entered a particularly large box stall. Standing inside was her 5y/o Fresian mare, Midnight Play, and her twin fillies. Susan was sitting in the corner, bottle feeding the slightly smaller filly, Sorceress. The other filly Temptress was suckling for Midnight’s milk. Temptress was so pushy that Sorceress couldn’t get to the milk. Besides, Midnight did not have enough milk for 2 foals. “Hey Helen” Susan said as Sorceress (Sorceress is Susan’s). “Do you want to help me work with Belle?” Helen asked leaning over and petting Temptress (Temptress was her foal). The evil little filly immediately bit Helen’s finger and began to buck playfully. “I swear that Filly is possessed” Helen said, laughing and holding the finger Temptress and bitten. “C’mon lets go” said Susan. They both gave Midnight a pat then walked out of the stall.
