*Sorceress*
Susan walked out to the paddock, halter tucked behind her back, and looked at the twin 20 month old Friesian frolicking together in the paddock. Sorceress galloped gracefully over, her mane and tail blowing about in the wind. Susan slipped the halter over her head and smiled. The loving filly was spirited and smart. She had gotten big enough to keep her sister from pushing her around. Susan led Sorceress to the barn and put the filly in her comfy box stall. She picked up the currycomb and began to groom the filly without any ties. She stood very still and relaxed as she had been taught to do. “Good girl.” Susan cooed as she used the soft brush on the filly’s nose. Soceress stood still for a 40 minute grooming and then snorted eagerly as she was led to the arena to practice halter. The big Friesian filly was almost two years old and had been introduced to saddle already. She had naturally extended gaits that made her graceful and powerful. Susan trotted her smoothly around the ring in hand and marveled at her sensitive, relaxed manner. Sorceress halted at a light tug on the lead shank and stood with her head high and her tail lifted. Susan clucked softly and the mare walked smoothly forward, her neck arched gracefully. Sorceress did every part of halter with a practiced ease. “Excellent!” Susan praised her as she turned her out in the paddock. Then she went out to get Sea. The TB/Percheron colt was spirited but fairly easy to train. Susan was going to teach him to load today. At 8 months old, he was sturdy and healthy. Susan led him to the barn and smiled as he tossed his silky black mane. He was frisky today and Susan didn’t think she should try to do much with him in this hyper mood. She brushed him in the barn and smiled as he nibbled at the brushes in his tack brush. She stopped him and grasped his hoof gently. “Up.” She said gently. He lifted his hoof obediantly and she picked it. Sea did the same with his other three hooves and then stood calmly as she combed his mane & tail. She surveyed his gleaming black coat proudly and put him in his stall. The colt got better every time she handled him. She walked into the office and began to work on her article for Practical Horseman magazine.
