Lady tossed her head and raced eagerly across the paddock, towards Susan. The elegant Trakhner slowed gracefully and halted in front of her owner. Susan laughed and clipped the lead shank to Lady’s halter. The mare pranced alongside her as they went into the barn. Susan hooked her in crossties and began to brush Lady’s satiny coat. After picking the mare’s hooves, Susan tacked Lady up and strapped on her helmet. The big mare snorted eagerly as Susan swung into the dressage saddle and squeezed firmly. Lady walked smoothly forward, her stride long and relaxed. Susan sat lightly, but firmly in the saddle, and pushed the mare swiftly forward. The pretty Trakehner came round and on the bit, looking superb. Her head was tucked to her chest as she trotted forward, responding perfectly to Susan’s signal. “Good girl!” her rider praised as she posted gently to Lady’s smooth energetic trot. After a thorough warm up, Susan sponged the reins gently and halted her lovely bay mare. She tapped the mare with one leg and then the other, doing the same with the reins. Lady walked backwards a few strides, tossing her head in displeasure. “I know you can do this! We always get marked down in shows because of your rein backs!” Susan said in frustration. She nudged the mare firmly with her outside heel and Lady cantered elegantly forward. Susan cantered a circle on her and got her relaxed again. Then she halted the mare and gently asked for a rein back. Lady snorted in irritation but stayed round and relaxed as she backed up smoothly. Susan patted the mare and smiled with pleasure. They did a few more rein backs, getting better each time. Then, Susan squeezed gently and Lady trotted collectedly down centerline. Susan held her rein and gave the subtle cue. Lady shifted into a shoulder in right, chomping the bit eagerly. Susan practiced a few more times and then halted Lady. She dismounted and led the lovely Trakehner to the barn. The mare stood calmly to be untacked and bathed. After being sweat scraped, Susan turned the bay mare out in the paddock with Delilah & Kiss.
