I can only help you on a couple of your issues. I used to run Mandrake on my Windows machine. Mandrake comes with Partition Magic. That allows you to easily create partitions for bot operating systems. My recommendation (since you are not going to use two computers) is that you get a small (possibly used) second hard drive and install Linux on that. That simplifies things considerably.

As for running Linux with a GUI or command line. I recommend that you run the GUI because you can always run command line whenever you want as well. That way you can start doing things on the GUI, and as you figure it out, you can slowly start using the command line as you feel comfortable. Those are my recommendations. Someone else may have something to add.
