ACT FOUR

Interior, Seth’s Apartment, Late Afternoon
GILES moves towards ROB.

SETH
What happened there?! What the hell’s
going on?!

ROB
[sincerely]
Sorry, mate.

ROB pushes GILES out of the way and darts out the door.

As SETH looks on in total confusion, GILES gets to his feet, and runs to the doorway. He scans the empty hallway and stairwell; ROB is gone. As GILES moves to go after him, SETH grabs his arm.

SETH
[aggressively]
What the hell is going on?!

GILES
[unreservedly]
Your friend is a vampire.

SETH
What?!

Half-pause.

SETH
That’s ridiculous! How can he be a vampire?!

GILES
[calmly]
Some time between when you last knew him,
and now, he was turned into a vampire.

SETH
I don’t believe you. You’re lying.

GILES
You saw what just happened. What do you
think caused it?

SETH
I.. I don’t know. But I do know he isn’t some
monster! Why didn’t he try to suck my blood?!
He’s been here all morning, he had every
chance. And why would those vampires be
after him if he was one of them?

EMILY
Perhaps because he was sampling the goods
instead of selling them.

Pause.

SETH
No. No! He’s not whatever you two are making
him out to be!

GILES
[sternly]
Yes, he is. He’s a soulless demon, and we have
to find him, and kill him, before anyone else gets
hurt.


Exterior, Bath, Late Afternoon
ROB is running from SETH's place as fast as he can.

It is still terribly overcast, and starting to rain. ROB runs into an alleyway, where an old TRAMP is sheltering from the rain.

The TRAMP looks at ROB, who is checking over his shoulder.

TRAMP
And I thought I’d had a bad day. You look
like you’ve had a hellish one, and then
some. Look like you could use a drink.

The TRAMP offers rob a half-full bottle of whisky.

ROB
You’re not wrong.

ROB morphs into vamp face.


Interior, Seth’s Apartment, Late Afternoon

SETH
We should help him.

GILES
You’re not listening. The only thing we can
do for him now is to kill him, and put him out
of the world’s misery. If he was ever really
your friend, then you owe him that.

SETH
Look, if you’re so eager to kill vampires, why
not kill the ones that are actually evil? Like the
bastards that are after him, and probably did
that to him in the first place! Maybe we can
turn him back, like in The Lost Boys, where
they kill the master vampire, and Michael
becomes human again.

GILES
[grimly]
It doesn’t work that way. There’s no humanity
left in him. Once a vampire, always a vampire.

SETH
But that doesn’t mean he’s evil. Maybe he can
stop acting like a vampire. He doesn’t have to
kill people.

GILES
Exactly. He doesn’t have to. But he wants to.
He doesn’t have a soul. Vampires are evil. And
they’re not the same person they were as a
human. All that’s left of your friend is a demon
that’s hijacked his body. And if he really was
your friend, you’ll save him from that.

SETH
By killing him?

GILES
It’s the only way.


Exterior, Alleyway, Late Afternoon
ROB continues to feed on the TRAMP.

The VAMP BOSS and his two lackeys appear behind him.

As ROB spins around, the SKINHEAD VAMP throws him up against the wall.

ROB
[to the Vamp Boss]
Boss, I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself. It
was good blood. But I’ll get you the money.
You’ve just got to give me some more time.
I can-

VAMP BOSS
[interrupting]
I don’t want to hear it.

The 2nd VAMP produces a stake.

VAMP BOSS
[to lackeys]
Just stake the little bastard like that Watcher
should have!


PERSON
[O.S.]
“…Don’t you mean- ‘is going to’?”


Exterior, Alleyway, Late Afternoon
The three VAMPS spin around. As they do so, a flaming arrow comes flying into VAMP 2’s chest. He ignites, and dies from the arrow through the heart and fire simultaneously.

Camera quickly pans to: Five WATCHERS, including the PARAMEDIC that escaped earlier, a.k.a., Watcher RICHARD WHITE. The 2nd WATCHER is holding the crossbow he’s just used to dispatch the 2nd VAMP; the others are holding stakes.

Tense pause.

The WATCHERS rush the VAMPS, and chaos ensues.

SKINHEAD VAMP knocks the 3rd WATCHER over as he rushes at him, and goes for the 2nd WATCHER, as he struggles to reload the crossbow. SKINHEAD VAMP smacks the weapon out of his hand, ducks a punch, and knees him in the stomach. The 2nd WATCHER doubles over, and SKINHEAD VAMP grabs his head and twists, snapping his neck.

SKINHEAD VAMP smiles as the body of the 2nd WATCHER falls to the ground, but his look turns to one of horror as he feels something go through his chest. He looks down to see… (drum-roll) a stake sticking out his heart (bet that surprised you, didn’t it?). He turns around to face the 3rd WATCHER.

SKINHEAD VAMP
Oh, fu…

SKINHEAD VAMP turns to dust.

Meanwhile, the VAMP BOSS is attacked by WHITE and the 4th WATCHER. The VAMP BOSS throws WHITE into a wall. The 4th and 5th WATCHERS lunge at him with stakes; the VAMP BOSS grabs the arm of the 4th WATCHER and twists himself under it, then forces the stake into the WATCHER’s stomach (à la vamp that staked Buffy in “Fool For Love”). Nasty.

WHITE gets back on his feet and grabs the VAMP BOSS from behind. The 5th WATCHER takes the opportunity to stake him. The VAMP BOSS turns to dusty dust.

ROB, backed in a corner, looks on. The three remaining WATCHERS turn their attention to him.

Beat.

ROB turns and runs out the alley.

WHITE quickly turns to the 5th WATCHER.

WHITE
[indicating]
The bodies.

Then he and the 3rd WATCHER run after ROB.


Interior, Seth’s Apartment, Evening
GILES moves for the door.

SETH
Where are you going?

GILES
To find Rob. He can’t have gotten that far.
What you do is up to you, but if he’s your
friend, you’ll help me put him out of his
misery.

GILES walks out.

Pause.

SETH grabs his door keys off the table and follows GILES.

EMILY
[surprised]
You’re going to help him?

SETH
[walking out]
No. I’m going to stop him.

EMILY
What?

EMILY runs out after SETH.


Exterior, Bath, Evening
ROB is running from the WATCHERS down the middle of the street as fast as he can. It is raining. Several people, most holding umbrellas, are startled and watch as he hurtles past. He keeps checking over his shoulder as he runs. He is looking behind when…

…he runs straight into someone. ROB falls backwards. He looks up.

It is GILES.

ROB scrambles backwards on the pavement.

GILES walks towards him, and pulls a stake from his pocket.

ROB
[pleading]
No. Please. You don’t have to do this. Don’t
kill me. I’ll leave the town. Please, just-

The rain stops.

GILES
Spare me the Oscar-winner.

GILES goes for ROB with the stake.

As he does, it’s knocked out of his hand. GILES looks up suddenly. It’s SETH.

GILES
What the hell are you doing?!

SETH
I’m not going to let you kill him!

GILES
No, you have to let me kill him!

As they argue, ROB makes a run for it.

GILES moves to go after him, but SETH grabs his arm. GILES pushes him off. He moves to go after ROB, but then stops, and looks up. The clouds in the sky part.

As ROB runs towards a darkish alley, WHITE and the 3rd WATCHER run past SETH and GILES. They dive onto ROB, tackling him to the ground.

SETH rushes over to help him in slow motion, as the sun comes out from behind the clouds. Dramatic and teary music plays, probably something with flutes. As he runs towards ROB, sunlight streams down onto the street. SETH watches in horror as his friend bursts into flames and combusts.

The WATCHERS stand up and move away, as ROB disintegrates into dust. SETH arrives there just as the last ash falls. He stares on in dismay.

Gradually, GILES appears behind him and places a hand on his shoulder.

SETH shrugs him aggressively off.

GILES
I know you don’t want to believe it, but he
would have killed you eventually.

Silence.

SETH just continues to stare at the pile of ash.
