TEASER
Xander sits by his window in his apartment. Outside it is early morning and raining. The camera moves back to reveal Buffy is sitting next to him. They talk about the hurt and pain of losing people. Xander breaks down into a sob and Buffy cradles him. Buffy closes her eyes. She is immediately hit by a flash of a vampire snarling. She opens her eyes and looks out of the window. Slowly she places Xander's head on a cushion and kisses his forehead. A tear rolls down Xander's cheek.

In the vampire lair from the first episodes, a female enters. She walks into the centre of the serpent-like symbol. Bending down she touches the vampire dust, looking up she snarls and looks up with vampire features.

Credits

Buffy finds herself walking through the cemetery. She reaches her mother's grave. Buffy pauses and puts a flower by the grave. Spike says something. Buffy turns. (It is overcast so Spike is allowed out). Buffy and Spike talk about loss. Buffy tells Spike he has changed but things between them haven't. Spike assures himself Buffy loves him really.

A taxi pulls up outside the magic shop. A figure gets out of the vehicle and moves into the shop. It is Giles. Giles looks around slowly. His expression is blank.

ACT TWO
Willow and Dawn sit in the kitchen. Willow asks how Xander is/was. They talk about Xander and Anya. There is a knock at the door. It is Giles. Buffy and Dawn hug Giles. Willow walks off. Dawn slips off after Willow. Buffy tells Giles about Xander. Giles asks where Xander is. Buffy tells Giles how Xander is doing.

Outside Willow sits on the steps. Dawn comes out and joins her. Willow explains that last time she saw Giles she almost killed him. Dawn reminds Willow she tried killing her too but she has moved on. Dawn suggests Willow move on too. Dawn goes for a walk. Willow is left to sit and think.

It is afternoon. Xander walks around the apartment. He finds an item of Anya's and looks at it fondly. A knock at the door. It is Giles. Giles and Xander hug. Giles tells Xander that he is so sorry. It doesn't matter about the shop. What matters is Xander. Xander tells Giles he misses Anya. He blames himself. Giles tells Xander that people cannot lie about whether they love someone or not. It is obvious he does love her deep down, but still that wasn't the kind of love Anya wanted. Anya made her own choices. Xander tells Giles there will be a service. Giles leaves telling Xander he has some things to take care of. Giles tells Xander if he needs anything then just say. Xander thanks Giles. Giles leaves.

Back at the Summer's house Willow and Buffy are talking. Buffy worries that Dawn isn't back. Willow says it is late. Buffy goes out on patrol and Willow follows.

It is an overcast evening but the rain has stopped. Dawn slowly walks towards the park. Spike is there, on the swing looking really solemn. Dawn pauses before going to sit next to Spike. Dawn is pretty upset. She thinks Spike could have talked Anya out of doing it. Spike tells Dawn you have to make your own choices. He misses Anya. Dawn asks how Spike can; he hasn't got a soul. How can you have emotion without soul? Dawn goes to leave. Spike follows. Spike pulls Dawn back. Dawn slaps Spike. Spike tells Dawn he misses her. He really does. Spike is crying. Dawn hugs Spike. Over his shoulder the vampire from the teaser appears and aims a cross bow at Spike. Dawn: No!

ACT THREE
Xander lies in bed. He looks at a photo on the wall of himself and Anya. He throws a glass of water at the wall and water dribbles over the photo. The phone rings and Xander asks if it is Anya. It is the funeral directors. Xander puts the phone down and walks out.

In the park, Spike whips around and the cross bolt embeds in the palm of his hand. The vampire tells Spike he is a "Vampyr". She runs forward to attack him. Spike and the vampire (in non vamp mode) fight. Buffy arrives. The vampire is about to stake Spike, but Buffy stops her. The vampire vamps out and Buffy gets flashes of her as a slayer. The vampire runs off. Dawn helps Spike off the ground. Dawn asks if Buffy is okay. Buffy tells Willow to get Dawn home. Buffy runs off. Spike follows.

Willow and Dawn come back. They inform Giles that a vampire tried to attack Spike. Giles thinks that is weird. Dawn goes to get changed out of her wet clothes. Willow goes straight to researching. Giles offers her his jacket since she is wet too. Willow thanks him, then says sorry. Giles and Willow have a chat about everything and then Giles tells Will he is proud of her. Not many people can come back; she did. Giles kisses Will's forehead and goes to the kitchen. Willow reaches into a pocket. She finds the shop deeds and a cheque for Buffy. Giles comes back in. Willow realises Giles is leaving again and is leaving for good. Giles tells Willow that the gang are doing fine by themselves and he is not needed anymore; he has nothing left in Sunnydale. He says he is leaving after the service but he promises to return if things get bad. Willow hugs Giles.

Buffy and Spike run into town. Spike and Buffy head down an alley. Spike thanks Buffy for saving him. Buffy says he doesn't deserve to die - yet. Buffy and Spike reach a dead end. Buffy turns and Spike is really close. He tells her he knows that she loves him. That is why she is going after the vampire. Spike grabs Buffy's arms and tries to kiss her. Buffy is disgusted. Spike goes on about how they want each other. Spike puts his hand on Buffy's face and then tries to force himself on her. Buffy holds a stake to Spike's chest. Buffy tells Spike to stay away from her and Dawn. Buffy runs off.

Xander walks to the edge of the bluff (in Grave). It is raining. Buffy is running not really knowing where she is going. She stops. Through the rain she sees Xander. Slowly she approaches him. Xander and Buffy are both really upset. Xander sees a mark on Buffy's face; Buffy flinches when he touches it. She notices he has been crying; he remarks "all day". He tells Buffy is Spike hurt her then he'll kill her. Buffy says Spike isn't really her biggest problem right now. He asks what is. Buffy says "you". Xander looks up and Buffy says he is her best friend and it hurts her so much to see him in pain. A tear rolls down Xander's cheek and Buffy carefully touches it. They are very close to each other. Buffy leans forward as does Xander. They very tenderly kiss in the rain. Buffy says they should head back.

ACT FOUR
Buffy and Xander enter the house. Giles, Willow and Dawn ask if they are okay. Xander and Willow hug. Giles asks Buffy if she found the vampire. Dawn asks where Spike is and Buffy says he had things to deal with. Buffy reckons the vampire is a slayer. She had flashes of her. Willow is pretty shocked there is a sired slayer. Buffy asks if Giles knew about it. Giles did. He tells Willow to pull up the diaries she scanned in to the lap top. Willow types away. She pulls the file up. Turns out the slayer had a vampire lover. The lover turned on her and sired her. Buffy isn't that surprised. She says it is a vampire's nature.

As we see Spike walk through the cemetery in the rain, Willow's voice-over asks what they are gonna do about the sired slayer. Buffy's voice-over says that right now she may be killing vampires in her search for her vampire lover, but in the end she is very strong and dangerous. It is vampire nature to hurt humans and eventually she will. Spike enters his crypt.

Buffy and Xander walk along the side walk. Xander apologises for kissing her. He puts it down to heat of the moment and both being a in a bad place. Buffy is a little saddened by that but kisses Xander on the cheek. She asks if he is ready for tomorrow. Xander says we all have to let go sometimes.

(This last scene is a bit of a tribute to Smallville!) As Eva Cassidy's, Time after Time plays in the background, we move to the next day as the group, all dressed in black are crowded around a small circular patch of earth. It is raining really, really bad. We move to the scene where Xander plants a small tree and in front there is a little stone saying "in the loving memory of Anya…". More sadness. A look between Buffy and Xander. Giles walking away. Finally it is only Xander. From the shadows Spike looks on. Xander and Spike share a glance. Xander walks off into the rain.

TEASER
Buffy comes to the Magic Box to see if any texts might have survived that can help her find information on the sired slayer; she finds Xander. They sit down on the step and talk and he expresses his sorrow about Anya. Xander picks up a talisman from the floor and fiddles with it. Xander isn't sure he can cope with running a shop. Buffy suggests he do something else with it. Xander isn't sure he can since this the shop reminds him of Anya so much. Buffy talks him into leaving with her. Xander agrees. He throws the talisman on the counter and it splits in two. The talisman starts to glow.

Credits

ACT ONE
Willow and Buffy are discussing general business (Spike, new danger, etc.) when the discussion turns to Xander. Willow is a little worried about Buffy. Buffy denies anything is wrong, even though the incident with Spike in the previous episode is affecting her. Willow mentions Xander not being around as much and Buffy tells them about her encounter with him at the Magic Box.

Shift to Xander, who is standing over near where the counter once was, picking up charred objects with a profound melancholy. He picks up one half of the talisman we saw earlier and seems to be fascinated by it, holding it up as if mesmerized. Absently he touches the other half and suddenly hears Anya's voice warning him not to put those two together, that it would be a disaster. He reacts instantly, throwing the second talisman across the room and at the same time dropping the other one accidentally while looking around wildly, but then realizes that there isn't anyone there. It was just his own mind playing tricks on him, he decides. He begins to talk aloud, to himself, then to the shop, accusing it of taking away everything that mattered to him...then he freezes at the sound of Dawn's voice. Dawn tells Xander she came here to think about Anya since she spent so much time here. At the mention of Anya, Xander goes nuts. We see him start to trash what hadn't already been trashed like a crazy man until he suddenly stops, panting, when he sees the talisman he had dropped at his feet earlier. Again he hears Anya's voice, telling him that she loves him, and to pick it up. He does, muttering that he loves her too, prompting Dawn to make a remark about him losing his mind which Xander acts like he doesn't hear. It's like he doesn't even know Dawn is there anymore. Absently he places the talisman in his pocket and leaves the shop, leaving Dawn looking after him in confusion as Xander mutters the shop is cursed. Dawn looks worried. She looks around the shop then leaves too. The camera pans back and we see 'Anya' standing there, an evil smile on her face.

ACT TWO
Spike is in a bar talking with Clem. He saves a girl from a vampire. He then hears the girl's heartbeat. He tries biting her but the chip activates. He has Clem take the girl to hospital.

Willow stops by Xander's apartment. Xander is just leaving. He is clearly distracted and tries to brush her off, but she won't be gotten rid of until he promises her that he'll stop by that night, to help them with the research on the sired slayer bit. He even manages a smile when she tells him she loves him. Willow hugs him, but we see his face is utterly blank when she does and he hears Anya call to him.

Xander walks into the shop and shuts the door. Arms encircle him from behind, and we hear Anya's voice say she thought she's never see Xander again. We see Xander start to relax into the embrace, then suddenly realize what he's doing and jump. He whirls around...and there's no one there. Xander wonders aloud what the hell is going on...

...which cues us into a little Buffy exposition session with Dawn...a little explanation of sired slayer, Dark Mother, where we are to this point, with discussion of the Scooby session scheduled. Dawn asks about Spike, and Buffy says she doesn't want him there. Dawn questions that. Buffy tells Dawn to leave it. Dawn asks if Xander's going to be okay...

...as Xander wonders aloud if he's going crazy. Why does he feel like he has to be in the shop all the time? Why does he feel so...haunted? 'Anya' finally appears to tell him[with a real schmuck baity musical cue], "I'm not haunting you. I'm loving you. I'll never stop loving you." We (but not he) get that this kind of lovin', Xander does not need.

Buffy has a nap but is haunted by dreams of the sired slayer… Buffy decides it is time for action…

ACT THREE
Pick up on Xander and 'Anya' in the Magic Box. Xander thinks she's a ghost until she proves to be solid. Then he thinks she's a hologram. She asks him why it's so hard to believe that she's real. He answers that it's because he wants it to be true so badly. 'Anya' assures him that it is really her, but that he was right. The shop is cursed and she's been trapped inside...but she's found a way out. It means having to leave this dimension forever, and go to another one, a better one...and she needs Xander to come with her. He's the only one that can save her. Xander is floored but clearly has reservations. He suggests that he should go get Buffy and the others...

...Willow comes in to find only Dawn. Dawn hopes it is Buffy. Willow questions where Xander is. Willow heads out to search for Xander. Dawn tells Willow she will catch her up. Dawn moves over to the books about the sired slayer… she touches them and gets a flash of Buffy moving through the sewers holding a stake… Dawn heads out.

'Anya' begs Xander not to leave her, grabbing him and giving him a hug... He asks her what they need, and she tells them nothing big, just a sacrifice... 'Anya' comments you can't get around anywhere these days without blood… Xander panics. Anya calms him down by kissing him and seducing him. 'Anya' tells Xander that if he loves her…

...move to Spike in his crypt. He is in a foul mood and drinking. Dawn enters. Spike doesn't think she should be there. Dawn thinks Buffy is in danger; she wants Spike to help her find him. Spike starts going on about how Buffy doesn't deserve him. Dawn tells Spike to grow up. Spike pushes Dawn against the wall and screams in her face. Dawn is hurt. Spike looks at the blood on his hands. Spike starts apologising. Dawn looks at the blood. She gets another flash of Buffy facing the sired slayer. She sees through Buffy's eyes as Buffy enters the vampire lair from episodes 1/2 and meets up with the sired slayer. Dawn comes out of it. Spike asks if she is okay. Dawn asks Spike where the lair from episodes 1/2 is. Spike tells Dawn. Dawn walks out.

Willow is looking into the shop. She sees Xander in there, and sees Anya. Willow is a bit shaken. Willow looks in her bag for her phone to tell Buffy. She turns around to be face to face with Xander.

The sired slayer gives her some more cryptic info about "the Mother" and generally pisses Buffy off...the sired slayer claims that Buffy will eventually join the family and Buffy says she doesn't even know what a family is...

ACT FOUR
And we see Willow with her hands tied over her head, ritual sacrifice position, while Xander fingers the amulet and continues to talk to 'Anya' who mentions again how much she loves him and how happy they'll be once they get away from everyone who stands in their way. Xander experiences a flash of memory of his kiss with Buffy and is shaken. Willow tries to talk to him, telling him that he doesn't want to do this, that he was right and there was something evil here and he had to fight it. Xander has flashes of Willow too. He seems to come out of it a bit and tells Willow he's sorry, but he has to do this. He can't let Anya go. Willow reminds him that's how she felt not so long ago, and how he pulled her back...she tells him that they all want him here, and love him, and they had to stick together, because otherwise...

...and we see Buffy is in trouble. She appears to be losing her fight, and the sired slayer senses victory and therefore, in great villain tradition, gives a bit more cryptic blah Mother blah Lillith blah...Buffy's family has deserted her, the sired slayer crows, and Buffy locks eyes with her and says "never gonna happen," and the real whupping of sired slayer's ass begins ...

...at the same time Xander turns to 'Anya' and tells her that he's worried what Buffy will do without any of them, if they kill Willow and then leave, she'll be all alone. 'Anya' says it won't matter, they'll be together and happy, but Xander drops the amulet and his mind seems to clear. He tells 'Anya' that he's sorry but he could never be happy knowing he'd done things like this to his friends...that he did love her, but not enough. It was never enough, and this was his guilt making him do this, not his love... 'Anya' grabs Xander… Xander grabs a sword…'Anya' backs away but Xander swings the sword only to release Willow…

...Buffy and the sired slayer still fight. Buffy starts telling the slayer how vampires are evil beasts and so on… as she says it Dawn runs towards the abandoned factory… the sired slayer giving one more cryptic clue… Buffy is pissed off and stakes the vampire. Buffy looks around at the chamber, her expression troubled... Dawn watches her sister…

...'Anya' decides that if Xander couldn't 'love' her then Willow will...it shifts into Tara, all the time begging her to love her. Willow and Xander are horrified, but Willow figures that it's doing this because it can't actually kill them, it needs one of them to do the killing for it! It can't harm them, she cries triumphantly...and the monster, takes a ghost like form and rushes forward, knocking the two people across the room. They look like they'll be done for... Xander looks down at the talisman he is still holding. Willow distracts 'Anya' and Xander slides across the floor grabbing the other half of the talisman. 'Anya' shifts back, begging him not to kill her...and Xander says only that it's time for them both to move on, before bringing the second half of the talisman crashing down on the first. 'Anya' dissolves into the mystical energy we saw in the beginning, then dissipates with an unearthly scream. Xander smashes the talisman and it releases a flash of light. Xander falls to his knees, and Willow watches him. Xander is motionless.

In Spike's crypt, Spike washes the blood of his hands. It won't come off. He starts scratching at his arms. Harder and harder. He draws blood. Spike is mesmerized by the blood.

Xander sits on the step at the entrance to the shop next to Buffy. They talk about how hard life is and how moving on can be hard… Xander stands up. Buffy asks if Xander is sure he is ready for this. Xander nods. Buffy kisses Xander on the cheek and walks away as in the background Xander climbs a step ladder and starts unscrewing the sign to the 'Magic Box'.
