A good teacher has always been noble in the eyes of everyone. He educates the ignorant, convinces the bewildered, uncovers the potential, reforms the non-conformist, mellows the arrogant, moulds the defiant and eventually earns the admiration and the respect that he deserves. He will never reject the troubled, dampen the spirit, deny the unprivileged, abandon the unfavoured, ignore the delinquent and of course, never fail to lend a helping hand.

A good teacher like any other human, has his mood swings, his personal preferences, goals and ideals but what sets himself apart from the rest is that he wants his students to be better off than he is. He would do all that he can to bring out the best of his students and allow them to maximise their potential. He tries hard to communicate with his students and in doing so, ensures that no walls should be built, but in their place, bridges that last forever.

His teachings will always remain in his students’ hearts even after the student has been forgotten; his words will always be cherished deep in their souls even when the student’s name seems to have been forgotten. These words are especially dedicated to two great teachers, Mr Frankie Tan and Mr Yong Yuen Cheng, whom the NJ canoeing club is proud to have.

Mr Tan and Mr Yong, we will always remember you no matter what the future holds. You have always taught us the mentality to do the right thing the right way, to follow the belief of being wise, principled and happy fighters, and to strive valiantly with our hearts and souls. These will always be important values in our lives.

The batch of 2000-2001 has experienced tremendous adversities, and we were able to emerge from it stronger than ever only with your undying support and unyielding care and concern. We know that triumph and victory doesn’t come easily; “Any person can be successful over smooth seas, but it is the victor over the storm who gains true honour.” The effort that both of you have put in to mould us into mature canoeists surpasses any expectations of any teacher or student. Through constant and friendly reminders, we, at Our One Moment in Time, were able to be the Pride of the Sea.

The NJ canoeing club has become a second home for us all as it was the place where we cultivated life-long values, forged strong bonds and championed the cause of loving the things we do instead of doing the things we love. We are grateful to all that you have done for us and our only regret is not having done more for both of you. In our hearts, both of you will always be the greatest teachers that are, the greatest teachers that were and the greatest teachers that will ever be.
