First of all, WtP did list as a possible ending of tragedy situations in which the "hero" learns nothing and is left railing against fate. Second of all, there is normally only one hero in a tragedy, and if any figure winds up learning something it is this figure. The secondaries can remain totally unenlightened. Such as Lady MacBeth, for instance. Nor can every figure in a tragedy who comes to a bad end be viewed as a "tragic hero".

So I don't think WtP's nightmare alternate vision of Season 5 is impossible, at all. Which is not to say I think they ever planned it that way, either. I just don't think we have enough information to judge.
