] Date Posted: 15:51:51 07/17/01 Tue Why do cabdrivers expect a tip when their job is to provide door-to-door service? I can understand giving a tip if the cabbie has to handle luggage, but they expect one regardless. --Karen G., Chicago [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 16:00:09 07/17/01 Tue Taxi drivers and waitpersons depend on tips for a substantial part of their income. If you didn't tip, presumably they'd expect to be paid more, and your restaurant bills and taxi fares would consequently be higher. The fifteen percent standard is mostly a question of what the market will bear. In New York, the figure these days is twenty percent; European restaurants generally add a ten percent gratuity to the bill. |

You might as well ask "why does a waitress in a posh restaurant expect a tip when their job is to bring you your food"? Not all waiters get tips regularly. That's just like not all Cabdrivers get tips regularly. If all you are getting is door to door service, DON'T TIP! If, on the other hand, you get PLEASANT door to door service, then tip accordingly. Date Posted: 06:04:49 07/25/01 Wed I think as a taxi service provider I try to follow one rule about tipping that I think is important. NEVEEREXPECT A TIP. Theres a reason they call it a "gratuity". Do I want a tip? Sure, I just think I get better tips by not expecting one. Besides those that overtip make up for the ones that don't. |

Date Posted: 12:19:51 07/26/01 Thu The thing I hate is when some asshole in the car makes an ISSUE out of not tipping you, a big production of it. Not like a waitress where you can just pay and walk out, these guys seem to consider it a power play over you, when they feel they can control your fate with the 5 cent tip or without. |
