I agree with Evan’s analysis but for the question marks he puts at Karpov’s chess strength.

>There are reports of Soviet rivals throwing key games to enable Karpov to win international events.

I have not read those reports. Fischer said that Spasski was forced to lose games just to let Fischer look less strong. I think it’s ridiculous and Spasski himself never acknowledged it. For me the chess strenght of Karpov is indisputable. It is also not very logical. The Sovjet Union wanted to excel in chess like it wanted to excel in all sports. To have the strongest sportman on top was in the interest of the authorities. When you know anything of chess you know that chess was/is completely dominated by the Sovjet Union. After Fischer there was no chessplayer, outside the Sovjet Union who came near to Karpov. Timman was called the best of the West. The idea that Karpov needed help to beat Timman is ridiculous. Significant is that Evan’s speaks of international events.

I do believe that the authorities did everything to avoid the match, Karpov even admits that, but I also believe Karpov himself wanted to play Fischer. I know chessplayers, I’m a chesplayer myself. Every chessplayer on this earth dreamed/dreams to play against Fischer. You really believe that an enormous talent as Karpov does not regret he never played against Fischer?
