Where do you get your information from? How do you know nobody suggested alternative conditions? I'm not an expert in this case, but I clearly remember that the issue went on for years. In the West everybody was eager to see Fischer play again, no doubt about it.

That's right. He never compromised. He made it easy for the Russians to avoid a match.
