I am one of eight guys from the 2nd platoon 272nd MP Co. who lived in the National Police station in Bong Son and ran defile control over the bridges. I was moved out of the area in August 68.

My memory is that one bridge handled foot and light vehicle traffic and one handled Five Ton and bigger traffic, hence the need to stop traffic and run convoys over the larger bridge.

Around June '68 a causeway was constructed about two hundred yards up river so that heavy traffic could flow both ways eliminating the need to hold convoys in the village or worse, in the open on the south side of the river where they were subject to sniper and recoiless rifle fire.

In the pix linked to the site (from 1970) the causeway was gone. What happened. Was it flooded out, destroyed?

Be well you guys,

Tom Bixby
