Post 337 A: Clan Alexander, MacAlister, MacDonald

It may seem strange but all three of these Scottish Clans are the same family. The MacAlisters were the first branch to break away from the large Clan Mac Donald. They claim descent from Alasdair Mor, son of Domhnall founder of Clan Donald. Kintyre was the seat of the Chief of the Clan MacAlister as far back as the 15th century. In the 18th century a Chief of Clan MacAlister, sold the land that was the seat in Kintyre and moved himself and the seat to a lowland Scottish estate.

Traditionally it's stated that Clan MacDonald is from Domhnall, son of Raghnall, son of Somhairle, son of Gille Brighde. As a 12th century leader, Somhairle is styled "King of the Isles" and "King of Argyll".

In the year 1253 Alasdair Mor first appears in records as a witness of a charter by Aonghas Mor a Ile, his brother, for the Abbey of Paisley. I assume that is "Angus Mor of the Isles". Mor in old Scottish is "big".

Tradition has it that Alasdair Mor had at least five sons: Domhnall, Gofraidh, Donnchadh, Eion and Eachann. Domhnall succeeded him. In the 14th century descendants of Alasdair Mor settled in the county of Stirling. The first record of this is when Gilbert de Insula, son of Domhnall, received a charter for lands in that region in 1330.

The family is difficult to trace as there were many brothers who had many sons, that were often named similar or the same names. King James III granted a large amount of land in Kintyre to John, Lord of the Isles, in the year 1481. The Area of Lowb or Loup were among those lands granted.

I am a descendant of Elizabeth Alexander, born October 28th, 1735 in Antrim, Ireland. She married John McClung, born 1731 in Antrim, Northern Ireland, died in 1817 at Rockbridge, Virginia. John McClung can be found in the Sons of the American Revolution, national number 82445 and number 4905 from the application for Frank Lyman Hill dated July 16, 1957. John McClung was a Lieutenant in the American Army of the Revolution.

The line is as such:
John McClung = Elizabeth Alexander
Margaret Mary McClung, b. 1754, Va. = Robert Hood Tate
Aaron Tate, b. 1786, Va. = Elizabeth L. Connelly, b. 1789
Maburn "Dock" Tate, b. 1811 = Delana Killion, b. 1824
Elizabeth "Betty" Tate, b. 1855 = Solomon S. Puryear, b.1847
Mary Ada Puryear, b.1876 AL. = Linnville Andrews Dugger, b.1872
Rosa Grace Dugger, b.1904, AL. = Wiley S. Barnes, b.1902
Ruby Catherine Barnes, 1929 =/= Dave Franklin Jackson, b. 1924
Michael D. Barnes, b. 1958

The parents of Elizabeth Alexander are Archibald Alexander, born 4 Feb. 1708, Ireland; and Margaret Parks, born 31 Jan. 1712, Donegal, Ireland. Both seem to have moved to and died in Virginia. Archibald's parents were William Alexander, born 1686, Manor Cunningham, Donegal, Ireland; and Jane Scott, b. 1681. William Alexander's father was Archibald "of Ballybiglimore" Alexander, b. abt. 1611.

Archibald's parents have been said to be John "of Eredy" Alexander, born abt. 1587, Scotland and Agnes Elizabeth Graham, born about 1580, daughter of Robert Graham of Gartmore, Earl of Strathearn, Menteith and Airth.

Agnes is listed as the daughter-in-law of Sir William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling, Viscount of Canada, Baronet of Nova Scotia. It's known that Sir William had Archibald turn over the Chiefship of Clan Alexander to him.

When young, Sir William was the tutor of Earl of Argyll. Later he became the Gentleman Usher to Prince Charles, son of James VI of Scotland. Prince Charles became Charles I of England in 1625. William was Knighted by King James in 1609. In 1621 King James granted Sir William a royal charter to New Scotland (Nova Scotia) New Brunswick and what is now Long Island, New York. The territory was made a lordship and then a barony. Sir William had made a fortune trading with India and used it to settle Nova Scotia. Also the creation of Baronets of Nova Scotia was used to settle the plantation of those new provinces.

The King of Scots in a peace treaty with France gave Nova Scotia back to the French, costing Sir William a fortune.
The Clan Alexander along with Clan MacArthur raided the Island of Arron taking 12,000 scots pounds worth of goods. No one knows if the raid had been orchestrated by Sir William or not. At any rate he played no part in the raid and stayed in the Kings good graces. The raiders were declared as "rebels" by the King. Two Alexanders were hung for the raid on Arron. Many Alexanders are believed to have fled to Ireland where the Ulster Plantations were being founded. Some to escape the wrath of the King of Scots, Others for the opportunity to settle the lands of Ulster. Still some may have been for both reasons. It's said that many who played no part in the raid thought it best to leave Scotland. Among them may have been several sons of Sir William Alexander, including John "of Eredy" Alexander.

Proof of William Alexander, born 1686, being the son of Archibald "of Ballybiglimore" Alexander is found in:
Chapter XXVI (Chaptee XXVI) of,

Please remember to add the third "w" to the address, as this site, voy, will not allow me to post it.

The King of Scots had promised to pay Sir William 10,000 scots pounds. The money was never given to Sir William, his descendants or any of his relatives. In fact it is still owed. If the British Government ever acknowledged any descendants of Sir William Alexander the money would have to be forth coming. In todays market I make it at between $40,000,000 and $400,000,000. But that is only a guess on my part.

"He was promised L 6000, and L 10,000 was actually voted in recompense for his losses in connection with what was really a national enterprise, but neither he nor his successors ever actually received payment"

The above from: "THE ERELS OF STIRLING. 71" ww.archive.org/stream/clandonald20macd/clandonald20macd_djvu.txt

Under the same above address for Clan Donald in Archives on 48 one finds the raid on Arron. On 75 one find the Titles issued to Sir William:

75:
"The Earl of Stirling seems to have been haunted by the apprehension that the honors he had acquired might pass out of the line of his direct descendants to some collateral branch. With the view of preventing such a contingency, he surrendered his titles of Baronet of Nova Scotia, Lord Alexander of Tullibody, Viscount of Canada, and Earl of Stirling into the King's hands shortly before he died. Thereupon the King, by a charter under the Great Seal, of date 7th December , 1639, granted these titles de novo to the heirs male, and failing them to the eldest heirs female. Yet notwithstanding several sons having been born to him, and numerous descendants of later generations having arisen in the male line, by a singular fatality his titles became extinct in less than a century after his death.
Lord Alexander, the Earl's eldest son, did not succeed his father, having pre-deceased him by about a year,..."

Thus goes the line of Alexander, which I am a part of.
What can one say? I guess when a King or Government cheats, and lies there is no consequences as there is for you and I.

Until next time, be safe.
