Post 324 A: Adam De Charleton, a Royal of Wales.

On Post 323 A:, it was shown in Burke's 'THE GENERAL ARMORY' book of Arms and Heraldic dignities that "ADAM DE CHARLETON, lord of the manor of Charleton, in Tyndale, co Northumberland, A.D. 1303," bore the Arms of, 'Or, a lion rampant. gules.'

Or is the color gold. It's usually represented by the color yellow. A lion rampant is a lion standing on its back legs with its front paws in the air, as if attacking. Gules is the color red. Thus you have a red lion standing on its back paws as if attacking, upon a yellow (gold) shield.

Consequently these are same arms as those borne by John Charleton, 1st Caron Cherleton.
See: http://en.wilipedia.org/wiki/John_Charleton_1st_Baron_Charleton
On that page it describes it as, "Traditional Coat of Arms of the de la Pole and de Cherleton families. Or, a lion Gules armed and langed Azure."

Armes and langed azure just means the lions claws (armed) and tongue (langed) are Azure (blue). It's a minor difference and one that might have escaped heraldic writers of old. Or it may be a difference that was added at a later date.

But what this evidence indicates is that Adam De Charleton was the son of John De Charleton, 1st Baron of Powis ((Powys), Wenwynwyn.

These were originally the Arms of the House of Mathrafal, a cadet branch of the Welch Royal House Dinefwr.

These were not originally the arms of Baron John Charleton. He achieved them through his marriage Hawise Gadarn (the Hardy), daughter of Owain ap Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn, who had changed his name to Owen de la Pole. Owain was the last Welch Prince of Powys Wenwynwyn until 1283 when it was abolished by the Parliament of Shrewsbury.

John De Charleton married Hawise on 26 July 1309. Thus this indicates the date of Adam De Charleton's birth is also wrong. Unless Hawise bore John Charleton a son before they were married he, Adam de Charleton, would have almost assuredly been born in 1310 or later. If he had been born to another woman before his fathers marriage to Hawise he would have had no right to bare the Arms of the House of Mathrafal.

John Charleton, 1st Baron Cherleton was succeeded by his son John Charleton, 2nd Baron Charleton. This would seem to indicate Adam De Charleton was a second son.

The Charleton family of Hesleyside became Border Reivers. These were raiders along the Scottish-English border. This was an area of great lawlessness where people lived by their sword and their wits, constantly ready to do battle. They lived in this state of readiness from the late 13th century until beginning of the 17th century.

"The almost constant warring between England and Scotland changed the lives of families living immediately north and south of the Border. Owing to their geographical position they were frequently harassed by passing armies who, at the least, would require provisioning, often without payment, but were usually hell bent on destroying everything before them and causing as much damage and misery as they could.

Crops were destroyed, homesteads burnt and people murdered or dispersed.

Reiving, raiding for cattle and sheep, and whatever else which could be transported, was the only way to survive and it became an established way of life, a profession, which was regarded with no discredit amoungst the Borderers.

The practice spread and was passed down through the generations.

Reiving was not limited to the poorest people, and many a nobleman condoned and even participated in the activities. Officials such as the Wardens of the Marches, who were there to uphold the law, were not above indulging in reiving if they had the opportunity."

"Robbery and blackmail were everyday professions, raiding, arson, kidnapping, murder and extortion an accepted part of the social system.

While the monarchs of England and Scotland ruled the comparatively secure hearts of their kingdoms, the narrow hill land between was dominated by the lance and the sword. The tribal leaders from their towers, the broken men and outlaws of the mosses, the ordinary peasants of the valleys, in their own phrase, 'shook loose the Border'."

Excerpt from The Northeast England History Pages
________________________________________________

"'The Spur On The Dish' by Sir William Bell Scott depicting the Charleton family assembled for lunch at Hesleyside.

The Lady of the house brought in a salver and dish for her hungry family but the salver has been lifted to reveal an empty dish, empty that is except for a riding spur. It was a great tradition of the Charleton family that when the larder was empty the spur would be presented in this way as a hint that if the family wanted food they would have to go raiding."

The two main branches of the Charleton or Charlton family are from the areas of Pawis, in North Wales. And from Hesleyside and Hexham in Northumberland. But both seem to have the same roots and seem the be in descent from the Royal bloodline of Wales. I do hope this was of some interest. So long for now, friends and relatives, far and wide.
