Who are Nails and Catherine?

These "greatest ever" sports arguments are fun, but a little silly. People will always pick players or events from contemporary times because a) they remember watching them and appreciating the greatness b) it's nice to think that you've seen the greatest ever. Really, is it realistic to think that in 100 years of the World Series that the six greatest series all occurred in the past fifty years? And it's not suprising that the plurality of voters in that poll picked last year's World Series as the greatest ever.

Of the two from that list I remember, the two most recent, 1991 stands out more for me. That was the year two worst-to-first teams, Atlanta and Minnesota, battled it out. The Braves were beginning an incredible run of division titles that still hasn't ended - the Twins were having one of their patented one year anomalies (or aberrations, as Bud Selig might say). Almost all the games in that seven game series went down to the wire - three went to extra innings. Jack Morris' complete game shutout in game seven was a classic. That particular series also gets points for serving as warmup act for my Bluejays' back-to-back championships in 92-93. Touch 'em all, Joe!

Btw, despite my opinions on conceptions of all-time greats, I hope to see Barry Bonds play in person before he retires so that I can tell my grandchildren that I saw the greatest baseball player who ever lived play the game.
