Subject: Question of Judaism

I was in a hospital in Toronto the other day, Mt. Sinai a private Jewish hospital and I noticed that they had "Sabbath elevators" and "Sabbath doors" specified. I don't understand. I have asked a few Jewish friends about it and they have no idea why either. My understanding is that an elevator just wouldn't be used on the Sabbath and that stairs should be taken in the first place, but maybe because there are so many floors... What would constitute a "Sabbath elevator"? Why would 1 be specified for this purpose? The Sabbath door, I thought might be because it is a manual door and not an automatic door, but where that specific door was, there were no automatic doors around.

I'm curious. Any input?
