We set up a bird feeder near the steps of our front porch. Our indoor cats sit on a stool behind the (locked) screen door and watch the birds eat. One day I walked into the living room
and watched one of our cats "talking" to the birds. It was actually a steady stream of meows.
It gave me an idea for this poem.

With my own four eyes
I chanced to see
Sassy,
Or calico cat,
Chattering away to the birds.
While the birds dined at our cafe
She was providing dinner conversation.
My goodness, I mused.
Frankly, I was amused.
A conversation?
What on earth could they discuss?
And then,
Realization.
Inspiration.
Surely they weren't
GOSSIPING?
My imagination took flight.
Perhaps.
Maybe,
They were saying this"
"Did you see Mrs. Robin's children?" "They look nothing like the father".
Or,
"Did you hear Mr. Cardinal was at the parking lot of a liquor store?" "Oh my!"
Or,
"Mr Blue Jay was seen at the police station!" "What did he do?"
I snapped back to reality.
Thinking,
It couldn't be.
Could it?
