Are slow or traditional dances better for hornpipe and treble jig?I don't think so. My first competition in Novice hardshoe I got first beating a girl who did the slow hornpipe, I'm not sure if she placed at all. I've beaten people many times who were doing slow dances. I don't think it matters either way.
I still do beginner steps, so is there anything in particular I should work on, i.e. lift, or turnout? I think the most important thing foremost is being on time. If you're timing is off you want place, as easy as that. With hardshoe it's easier to tell when someone is off time because you can definatley hear it, it sticks out. Listen to your music ALOT and say your steps to them, that's how I got the rhythm down for all my dances.
Along with timing goes, BE UP ON YOUR TOES! I don't think some people realize that you're supposed to be on your toes for hardshoe lol. If your heels are down you can them. My teacher compared it to playing a musical instrument: When your heels touch the ground it's like playing notes that aren't written in the music. Work on that.
Make sure every move you make is clear, your hops, trebles, etc. You don't want a muffled sound.
Last but not least, upper body and arms. Poor posture annoys me so much, you have no idea!!! I hate when people slouch. Suck your stomach in and don't move your shoulders and arms. It looks yucky when people do.
That's it, just remember to practice.
