Subject: Guess Who box set/other projects

http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/mar29_guesswho.html

To coincide with their reunion tour, The Guess Who is looking into the possibility of releasing a multi-disc retrospective of the group's career -- including never-before heard material, the group's manager told JAM.
Lorne Saifer confirmed Tuesday that The Guess Who is having discussions with their record label BMG about digging into the band's archive for a new career-spanning release . . . (see rest of story online).

I can lend a bit of history to this. I had a good one-on- one chat with Randy a few years ago, and then a few years later with Burton -- about all the material each one had in their archives. Or for that matter, material that is sitting in various media vaults in Canada and the U.S. To make a long story short, Burton told me a good selection of unreleased/rare material was supposed to show up on what was to become "The Ultimate Collection" in 1997. Well, when it came out, I was disappointed with the product (as I read a lot of you were). It was just another repackaging, although it did have those couple of alternate takes at the end of the 3rd CD. It was hardly, I assume, what Burton had envisioned, as he thought he may may be doing some liner notes (like his excellent Track Record recollections). The UC project was harldy what this band deserved. I stressed (more like pleading, possibly begging) to Randy & Burton to get this material out to the fans, because of the vast hunger for it.
But if any of you have been in the record business, it's a bloody nightmare releasing material when the band in question is not together in spirit. That's why I'm buoyed by the fact that this material mentioned in the story may finally get released. One important factor, and I can't stress this enough, is how many box sets get pared down (material getting mercilessly cut) because record executives will say "we can't add a fourth or fifth CD, or make the package long box, because that will drive the price up to the point where we think we can't sell enough units." I can't speak for all of you, but I would certainly be willing to pay $80 to $100 for a comprehensive GW box set that is done the way the band wants it done. I'd rather have a 5-CD set than a 3-CD set that is made to appease financial considerations. I'd be willing to bet that most people on this bulletin board would be willing to pay $100 to get as much material as possible, than a 3-CD cram job that sells for $49.99.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree with your comments. I was excited to see that there will be a box set released, and the more content the better.

One of the best things about the Ultimate Collection was the alternate AW take. I want more unreleased gems!

Ever notice at All Music they suggest related albums to the one you're searching for? For the Guess Who they suggest The Carpenters:Love Songs and ABBA:Collection! UGGGH! Who suggests this stuff?

When I last talked with Burton pre-Ultimate Collection, he said the plan was to possibly include old Guess Who radio jingles, commercials, recordings from the CBC Let's Go period, the Johnny Cash "live" performances, etc.

I've got a Burton promo for the Army Reserve (I think that's right). It's a 12 inch and there were a number of other artists doing 30 and 60-second spots. I'll have to take another look at it when I get home. It's interesting from a collecting viewpoint.
