  I was at the mike, making my introduction for my performance of "Timeless Love" on Saturday night. It started something like this, "You all know very well that my favorite female performer is the late Patsy Cline, but our next song is by my favorite male performer, Burton Cummings..." AND I heard this gasp from someone in the audience - stage right. Maybe it was more of a "yelp". Anyway, I couldn't see who it was, so I contined with something like "best known as the lead singer of The Guess Who... successful solo career... and we'd like to render our version of Timeless Love". The song went very well (what you can do with that song -- yum), and the audience loved it. But I had to find out who yelped. I found her during intermission. She is such a Burton fan that she has a cat named Burton Cummings. All the info I shared with her on the reunion, Burton's remastered solo CD's etc., was all new to her. I plan to send her the addy for the board. I don't know what moniker she might choose, but her name is Teri and she is from Sterling, VA. The great thing is, we both made the decision right there that we will attend TGW reunion concert together when/if it comes in our vacinity. For me the singing of that song and meeting another Burton fan have made this a Valentine's to remember.

  Thanks to Scott Relf (soulshack45@hotmail.com) for showing me where to find this forum and all the great reports he's posted. Scott has really gone to a lot of effort to help the Clubhouse out and Gary and Burton both appreciate all he's done.
  
  I am the "Jeff from the Sound Exchange" that Burton refers to in a number of KY58 Clubhouse shows, I get to find him some of the rarities he plays on-air and also get the opportunity to spend time with him on a regular basis, and you couldn't ask for a nicer, more gracious guy. No one cares more than Burton.
  
  The main reason I am here though is not to brag but to mention that I am always looking for memorabilia from the Winnipeg/Canadian music scene to display in my music store in Winnipeg (557 Portage Ave, if you ever visit town). I will pay cash or in some cases trade items for other items if this is acceptable. I never sell my memorabilia, I think its a little hypocritical to have a store here and not pay tribute to musicians of this calibre who have done so much for our community, and really could you ask for better ambassadors?
  
  Wether it be posters, photo's, ticket stubs, old Garnet Amp's gear or just general items of interest I'd love to hear about it. Speaking of Garnet, try visiting http://www.garnetamps.com for more info on Gar Gilles and his legendary contribution to the Guess Who and BTO sound.

  Saw a post on the imusic board listing a site for bootleg videos. Has anyone checked these out? I priced them they have a lot of stuff all 20$ apiece. There was some major griping on the Foghat board from someone afiliated with the band about quality. I am wondering if anyone has any of the BC videos, hows it sound/look etc. And is this a legite company or what. I have aquired stuff like this before but ya never know

  I really want the cd Heart. I feel it is pretty much his best album song to song than any effort previous and can't find it anywhere. By the way there is 5 tracks recorded in about 1986 with Randy Bachman from the short lived Bachman Cummings tour and also some really great stuff he wrote after Heart. One of those tracks is called Fame Junky which is brilliant and another called Heard It On The News which is about Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Keith Moon. I only know of some live versions that are out there from a radio simulcast in Detroit I do believe. Now Burt if you happen by this or Marty even you guys gotta push for this stuff to be released. It is such a shame to not have them atlease exist as a rarties collection.

  Hi,
  just yesterday got this new book by Vernon Joynson "Dreams, Fantasies and Nightmares from Far Away Lands: Canadian, Australasian and Latin American Rock and Pop, 1963-75".
  It is a rock encyclopedia-discography book and most of the entries in that book are by garage, psychedelia, progressive or hard-rock type of bands or artists. Of course Guess Who is there, but there are also Deverons (very short entry), Brother, BTO etc. The book is a little bit pricey (28,00 English pounds), but a valuable guide to those of us who collect records by obscure bands, only problem is, where can one get all these wonderful looking albums. Also one of the revelations in that book was an entry by Hagood Hardy, is he the same guy Guess Who made a song of (meaning Haygood Hardy).

  Burton played his new song on Tuesday's Clubhouse again. I stand corrected though. The song is called "There Ain't No More" (you can actually hear him announce the take number and title at the beginning of the song). The key line in the song is "That's all there is and there ain't no more". As I said, VERY melodic and VERY catchy. Good to see Burton hasn't lost his knack for writing a great hook!

  I just found out that Burton is doing a show in Toronto, on Saturday March 11. It's in the Royal York Hotel, in the Imperial Room. For people outside Toronto, The Imperial Room is an amazing room for live music, that goes sadly underused.
  
  His performance is part of a fundraiser called In Style - not to be confused with the magazine I suppose. There's a tiny bit of info about it on www.cleanansober.com. Click on the events button.

  Got to listen to the CD this morning driving to work. Really enjoyed it. The Mack the Knife song is great, Burton did a really good job on it. I liked Burton's piano playing on the live songs a lot, he noodled more than on UC&A.
  
  Listening to the CD got me thinking about Burton's voice. I really like it when he is singing in the lower keys, his voice is very full. I think he ought to sing more in the lower notes, especially as he has aged. When Jeff Lynne (ELO) produced Tom Petty's album years back he got Tom to sing more in a deeper voice (almost talking rather than singing) and I think it made for good music.

  CLUBHOUSE RETURNS -- Scott, Winnipeg, 03:21:57 02/08/00 Tue
  Monday's Clubhouse is officially my favorite episode! Here's the story why:
  Last week I went down to KY58, hoping to meet Burton on his way in to the station. I had made a CD for The Clubhouse featuring the A WILD PAIR album (never played in The Clubhouse!) I transfered from my record (KY58 only plays CD's) and other fitting rare oldies for the show. Unfortunately, Burton was still out of town, so I gave the disc to the receptionist and she assured me he'd get it. Today, thanks to Sam's post, I knew The Clubhouse would rock again, so I tuned in wondering whether Burton got the disc. Two songs into the show I heard the beginning of "I Need Your Company" from A WILD PAIR and knew he had it!
  When he announced the song, he mentioned that they had received an "excellent" CD called CLUBHOUSE SPECIAL but had no clue who it was from!! Oh no, he didn't look inside the book for the note I typed! I called the front desk of the station and asked the receptionist to tell Burton and Gary to look inside the CD booklet I made. A few songs later, Burton thanked me on the air and played "Love Dream" from the disc (another non-CD track, so far). Wow!! What a thrill. To be part of my favorite radio show, even in a small way, and be addressed on a live broadcast by one of my heroes absolutely made my day! Totally cool!!
  Burton also played a great new song by himself called "That's All There Is" (I think) which is VERY good. Mid-tempo and very melodic. Here's what he had to say about it:
  "It's a good song and it will probably be on my new album. I am going to California sometime within the next ten days to two weeks to meet with two very, very, hot, special producers, one of whom is Glen Ballard, who just finished with No Doubt. And he also did Alanis Morrissette's JAGGED LITTLE PILL album, which did 27 million copies worldwide. He also worked on all The Pointer Sisters' hits with Richard Perry, so I'm very much looking forward to that, and he likes this song so this could be on my new album."
  Sorry to say, there was NO mention of a Guess Who reunion, except when during "Howard's Hit List" when Howard was mentioning some acts coming to Winnipeg, he said "June 1..." to which Burton replied "The Guess Who?". Howard said, "Is that the date?" but then contiued his sentence announcing The Dixie Chicks will be in town. You know what I say to that? Who cares! I guess if a reunion IS taking place, the announcement is still forthcoming. Don't uncross those fingers yet!
  Burton also mentioned his CD shopping spree in Toronto last week and played many songs new to The Clubhouse by artists such as Donovan, Billy J. Kramer, The Piltdown Men, The Essex, Jimmy Clanton, Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, The Kenny Ball Orchestra and Ernie Fields. And yes, there were "appearances" by the ususal Clubhouse characters such as Alistair and The Major.
  I tell you, if The Guess Who do tour (and believe me, I want them to as much as everyone else) I'm sure going to miss The Clubhouse practically every day!

  Wow. The story about Woman Love that Burton Cummings told in the liner notes is a real tragedy. I never knew things went down that way. I was in the record business at the time (retail side with some A&R on the side), but was always led to believe Burton was released from his stateside contract because of poor U.S. sales of Dream of a Child. Damn. What guts BC had to walk away from that deal and not kowtow to the records execs. My opinion of the man, at least of his character, has gone way up. And he never bitched about it or aired his grievances publicly at the time, at least not in the U.S.

  As promised, here's the actual quote from Burton about the reunion from Thursday's Clubhouse:
  Gary MacLean:"Do you have any type of announcement to make yet?"
  Burton:"Well, it looks pretty good. It's pretty well official that The Guess Who are going to reunite and do a pretty lenghthy tour. The very last details are being ironed out right now. Everybody has spoken to each other. I've spoken to Jim Kale personally in the last few days. Bachman, Peterson, McDougall, Marty Kramer who handles the other guys, Lorne Saifer who handles my affairs. Everyone's talking and it looks great. It looks like we're going to start rehearsing in Winnipeg around the first week of April."
  This is the most Burton has said about the subject in a long time, and he sounded quite excited and positive about it.
  Burton also said he'd be back in The Clubhouse Friday.

  My sister told me everytime she listens to one particular radio station here in Philadelphia, she hears the DJ mention Burton Cummings. And now she tells me she heard this DJ mention on air about the possible Guess Who Reunion and it's looking good!! Although I haven't heard this myself yet, I checked out the radio stations' web page and lo and behold!!! She's got a link to this message board!!! What a way to go DEB!!   So what do you think of Burton's original idea to record the song with just him, his piano, & the backup singers? Personally, I'm glad the record label people enforced their will on this one and that we got the full arrangement. It might be the purest ballet of the bunch, with intense emotion to go with some of the sweetish tone he ever mustered. Sounds like he's crying at the end of that one. I think it takes my vote for top BC love balled.

  What a special thing for Burton to do. Here is an artist who doesn't ignore his fans -- great to know when you're hooked on a celebrity that they care enough to recognize it. Thanks very much to all of you (AW, Fred, Bannatyne, Sam and any others I've missed) who helped with this project and getting it out to the rest of us.
  
  What is this exactly? Is this literally something by Burton, literally for the fans? Or is this some rediculous Re-Mix that a Fan put together? C'mon, and Share the Wealth. How does this Fan Down South get a copy of this?
  
  By the way. I ordered the four ReReleases from HMV.com of the Burtster's first four solo albums. The Xtra Track on Woman Love, "Vocals On The Boat" is my favorite. The Nasally Line about how he "Prays it's enough for a slick little Tart like you" I can't get out of my head. Great Song.
  
  One more thing. I'm flying to Vancouver, BC in about a week. Are there any other Cummings Music surprises in store for me, when I check out the Canadian Music Stores?

  Monday's Clubhouse is officially my favorite episode! Here's the story why:
  Last week I went down to KY58, hoping to meet Burton on his way in to the station. I had made a CD for The Clubhouse featuring the A WILD PAIR album (never played in The Clubhouse!) I transfered from my record (KY58 only plays CD's) and other fitting rare oldies for the show. Unfortunately, Burton was still out of town, so I gave the disc to the receptionist and she assured me he'd get it. Today, thanks to Sam's post, I knew The Clubhouse would rock again, so I tuned in wondering whether Burton got the disc. Two songs into the show I heard the beginning of "I Need Your Company" from A WILD PAIR and knew he had it!
  When he announced the song, he mentioned that they had received an "excellent" CD called CLUBHOUSE SPECIAL but had no clue who it was from!! Oh no, he didn't look inside the book for the note I typed! I called the front desk of the station and asked the receptionist to tell Burton and Gary to look inside the CD booklet I made. A few songs later, Burton thanked me on the air and played "Love Dream" from the disc (another non-CD track, so far). Wow!! What a thrill. To be part of my favorite radio show, even in a small way, and be addressed on a live broadcast by one of my heroes absolutely made my day! Totally cool!!
  Burton also played a great new song by himself called "That's All There Is" (I think) which is VERY good. Mid-tempo and very melodic. Here's what he had to say about it:
  "It's a good song and it will probably be on my new album. I am going to California sometime within the next ten days to two weeks to meet with two very, very, hot, special producers, one of whom is Glen Ballard, who just finished with No Doubt. And he also did Alanis Morrissette's JAGGED LITTLE PILL album, which did 27 million copies worldwide. He also worked on all The Pointer Sisters' hits with Richard Perry, so I'm very much looking forward to that, and he likes this song so this could be on my new album."
  Sorry to say, there was NO mention of a Guess Who reunion, except when during "Howard's Hit List" when Howard was mentioning some acts coming to Winnipeg, he said "June 1..." to which Burton replied "The Guess Who?". Howard said, "Is that the date?" but then contiued his sentence announcing The Dixie Chicks will be in town. You know what I say to that? Who cares! I guess if a reunion IS taking place, the announcement is still forthcoming. Don't uncross those fingers yet!
  Burton also mentioned his CD shopping spree in Toronto last week and played many songs new to The Clubhouse by artists such as Donovan, Billy J. Kramer, The Piltdown Men, The Essex, Jimmy Clanton, Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, The Kenny Ball Orchestra and Ernie Fields. And yes, there were "appearances" by the ususal Clubhouse characters such as Alistair and The Major.
  I tell you, if The Guess Who do tour (and believe me, I want them to as much as everyone else) I'm sure going to miss The Clubhouse practically every day!

  Me again....if he hasn't quit smoking yet, he ought to try Zyban! It's the anti-depressant which was accidentally discovered to help people quit smoking. It's the only thing that EVER worked for me. I mean, I never quit for a DAY before I tried that, and it was pretty flawless. A bit of insomnia was the worst side effect....just got the "Guess Who Reunion" tape (1983) from ebay, lots of fun to watch (too short!) and the whole crowd in front of the TV was fascinated/amazed by BC smoking during 'American Woman.' Lots of discussion about, was it a prop, or for real, followed by repeated posts on 'it's getting shorter!" so it WAS real. Hope he doesn't smoke in concert anymore! (Always hated the way that looks). Okay enough of that tirade!

  First, let me say I have been and will be a huge BC fan. Living in flyover country in the US, I've supidly never availed the few opportunities to hear The Man sing live.
  
  I have to say that although I was mightily impressed, in general, with his playing and singing on the Up Close and Alone release, I was disappointed with the nasal tonal quality of his voice when he hit the high notes. Was he doing this because he likes to sing this way, or does he now have to do the nasal thing to hit the notes. Either way, this takes nothing away from Burton. I know all two well we all get older and parts start to go to hell. My question for those of you who get to see him on Canadian TV etc, does The Man still have it, or has he lost a few notes over the years? All comments I've read indicate he still has the voice, what I have heard indicate somewhat differenly.

  JOE- I hear what you're saying about BC being self-destructive but so was Elton John(alcohol,drugs). Since I live near New York and hear alot about Billy Joel, I know he has also chased his own personal demons(management that bankrupted him and Christy Brinkley). Somehow they both get much more publicity. When you compare talent, BC can both play the piano and sing better. Elton put out tons of material, Billy Joel wrote some tremendously catchy songs. As a BC fan of 31 years, I'm also frustrated because he has not achieved the same type of super-star status, especially here in the US. When you look at BC's solo career, he had great session players and control over what he put out most of the time. Not all of his album cuts were comercially viable and more material would have helped. You have to think that he had the final approval in just about everything. Well, he still has the voice, plays better than ever and has time left on his clock so maybe he can do it.

  I picked up "Chet Baker Verve Jazz Masters 32" (Vol), a 1994 release which includes EHTM, recorded 11-28-55 in Paris. The song originally appeared on "Chet Baker in Paris Vol 2" which is also on cd. Considering the date the sound quality is superb, was only $8.99 US. The liner notes mention that Chet made a strong impact which has deepened with time, yet his contribution remains underrated and underappreciated with the general jazz public (he plays trumpet and sings). Something we here could identify with-anyway I know many of you liked the song and I'm glad I picked this up.

  Some of us down New York (state) way have been advocating for years that if TGW reunite they should bring along a fifth musician to beef up the sound. The inclusion of Mr. McDougall is the perfect remedy. But in thinking of the Eagles reunion tour, I am of the opinion that TGW might borrow an idea from the California boys and do an acoustic set in their show, in which they can perform "Undun," "No SUgar Tonight," and (maybe even) "Lightfoot." But I think the main thing is to keep it simple and dignified. Nothing hokey or schmaltzy, and nothing out of character. Why add lasers when you have a 2-hour plus show filled with mega-hits and (hopefully) some new musical gems (perhaps we will get "Any Minor Miracle" or even a great unreleased track like "Just About Sane").
  BTW--I know I've brought this up before, but..... Since Burton will probably be doing a few of his solo numbers (ie: "My OWn Way To Rock" and "Stand Tall") and Randy will be doing some of his BTO tunes, shouldn't Garry and Jim be permitted to do a couple of tracks from LONELY ONE?   with regard to the upcoming reunion - if its a go - let's take it easy here. as far as i'm concerned it's always been about the music. forget about laser tech - the guess who were never about that - haven't you listened to the lyric from glamour boy - the guess who are everyman - the boys next door that made good. i hate to say this but they're canadian - easy, simple -what you hear is what you get - as a songwiter i take umbearage at the thought that without the sizzle you don't get the steak. while i'm in a ranting mood those of you who believe that bc never got as big as elton john or billy joel - well wake up. those are two of the most influential songwriters of the past twenty years. if burton hadn't been so self obsessed or self destructive he may have had a chance. he didn't for whatever reasons and its hardly the fault of his management- having spoken with numerous people who know - in a lot of regards the person holding burton back was burton himself. i'm one of his biggest fans - but let5's get real here - up close and alone has been milking people for far too many years now - let's hear something new - and as far as the gw goes - it's nostagilia pure and simple - and there's nothing wrong with that -- joe

  I personally do *NOT* think VFD's off the beam when he/she speaks of jazzing up the pending Guess Who reunion tour. I often get the impression that all of you who grew up listening to the Guess Who (c.1965-75) think that you're the only ones who listen to the band. I think VFD is bloody right in saying that reunion shows in general are often boring, ick-making affairs. If these terms are not "cute" enough for you, then let me give you another more direct one: "ZZZZZZZZZZZ" Why do some of you guys wonder why the Guess Who is not in the Hall Of Fame, that Elton and Billy are yielded three times the star power of Burton? SHI*TY MANAGEMENT, that's why. VFD's mention of the cheapo beaver thing is bang on the money. Wake up, friends, 1970 was 30 bloody years ago! If the Guess Who want to make a dent, they've got to get some fresh, zippy, smart, new-thinking PR people behind them, people with half of brain's worth of knowledge about the entertainment industry. Look at the Eagles. They didn't have to jump between laser beams and strobe lights in pink leotards. They did their gigs but at least thought of the benefits of working with fresh concepts, fresh ideas, and people who could at least conceive of a world with a splash of colour (oh sorry, "color") in it. To those of you who have a problem with jazzing up an old dinosaur (which, like it or not, is EXACTLY what the Guess Who is in 2000), let me say one thing: LET YOUR HAIR DOWN! Stop being so protective of music that you no more own than me or the Thompson brat down the street. Burton is not your pinup boy. Randy is not your personal guitar god. The Guess Who belong to all of us. Start thinking about other people, people who might want to see more of that old-time Burton, that old-time energy and snazz. Come on and dance!   Even though no press release has been issued I'm assuming the reunion w/ McDougell's a go. Next on the agenda:
  TGW needs to have some art/stage production people on their team to conceptualize a presentation that befits their legendary status, not just a group of hockey jersey Cannucks strumming their guitars. I know this flies in the face with some of our "the music's the thing" principles, but in the eyes of the world, TGW needs to demonstrate their 1st class status, none of that cheapo beaver face in front of Canadian flag kid stuff. This tour is foremost about leaving what is possibly the final installment on LEGEND OF THE GUESS WHO. This isn't about turning a short-term profit, cutting production corners/expenses...it's about the long term legacy ( = more $ in the long run). I'm not talking about borrowing Madonna's cast of thousands, but maybe something from the Rolling Stones book of tricks. Even Paul McCartney had a piano lowered from above to perform "Magical Mystery Tour".

  Well, the news is that the big Guess Who meeting will take place Thursday in Winnipeg with Cummings, Bachman, Kale, Peterson and McDougall. The Clubhouse won't be opened again 'til next week.
  "I won't be here for a few days now. I have to go for the big Guess Who meeting tomorrow and then Friday I'm flying to Toronto and then Saturday rehearsing for The Genie Awards. I'll be performing and presenting on The Genie Awards this Sunday night." (Get those VCR's ready!)
  Burton also played two unreleased Guess Who recordings from the 60's that Randy put on CD for him. "Summertime Blues" (Blue Cheer) and "Love Is All Around" (The Troggs). Both were recorded for local radio at the time. They both are quite faithful to the original recordings thay were based on. Burton also played another sond from the unreleased Bachman & Cummings album.
  Great to have a new home for the fan club! At least now we don't have to worry about disappearring posts.

I am sailing, I am broke, but I am sailing!!! Oh, yeah, the frosting on the cake, my band's doing "Timeless Love" for our Valentine's coffee house (we'll be in rehearsals tonight).   As you Canadians know we Yanks have to win at everything, from basketball to tiddlywinks to getting more CD orders for the For The Fans CD. It will be interesting to see what the final ratio is (if Fred's got the original breakdown, that'd be interesting to include, since a good 80 or so already have them-to put yourself to any effort over this, Fred)to see if our fan base if the theorized 50-50 or not.   Thanks for setting up the new board Deb, guess we're just a bunch of DP's (displaced posters). I really like the spontaneity of instant posting and it helps to keep a thread going. Hopefully you can just zap away the notorious abusers and they will get the message.   Ok, this should work ok as our new home, the old board was driving me crazy with all the system problems.It's alot like the old one, except it's not moderated, so posts should go thru right away instead of everyone having to wait for me to approve messages. I do still however, have the option of removing Spam ect. I know I don't have to say this to 99% of you, but the "no namecalling" or "No attack on other posters" rule is still in effect and it goes without saying that any post like that will be removed immediatly.( This is more to reassure some of you than admonish you,I think we've pretty much proved we can discuss/disagree w/o resorting to that.)
