Burton, I'd LOVE to hear your comments on (1) Eric Burdon (2) Kurt Cobain (3) Frankie Valli (4) Elton John (5) Frank Zappa (6) Ben Folds (7) Mick Jagger (8) Gino Vannelli (9) Freddie Mercury AND (10) Elvis Costello ...... maybe on their influence on you (if they had any), if you listen to their music, if you really can't stand them. iHawk

With regards to your posting...I always loved Eric Burdon...tried to sound like him when I was a teenager..saw him live last fall and was lucky enough to have a few beers with him in his dressing room after the show...he's still got leather pipes...I thought Cobain was to his generation kind of what John Lennon was to his...admire Cobain's songs...personal favourite is Heart Shaped Box...very much liked Frankie Valli in the early days of the Four Seasons...things like Walk Like a Man...didn't care that much for his later solo stuff...what can you say about Elton...brilliant player and writer...non musicians have no idea just how well this guy plays...I knew Zappa personally...we did a few large pop festivals together with the Mothers back in the day...got to talk to Frank one on one for a couple of hours one night in Seattle backstage...he showed me some of his scores he'd done for symphonies...he was truly a genius, and I don't use that word very often...haven't heart but two cuts or so by Ben Folds Five...need more time to warm up to what he's up to...Mick was great in my opinion many years ago...now it's all business and legend making...not much emphasis on the music anymore...Mick had gone too Gucci for me...but I did love Brand New Car on one of the latest albums...I've known Gino Vanelli personally for quite a while...saw him several times live and he was always great...his brother Joe is a wizard at programming keyboard sounds...I was blown away when I found out that those weren't real horns on People Gotta Move...don't forget...that was a long time ago and those sounds are very sophisticated....Freddie Mercury was one of my favourite singers ever...on My Own Way To Rock's cover, I dedicated the album to Freddie, Brian May, Seger, and Steve Miller...Freddie Mercury changed the approach to multi tracked vocals forever...Elvis Costello I have no use for...I don't like his voice, although I do admit he's written a few real winners...but he's a fuckin' racist and needs a good kick in the package...I even called him down in Bridge in Time on Plus Signs...he once called Ray Charles a "blind nigger" after which comment Bonnie Bramlett punched him in the face...remind me to send Bonnie some roses for that one...Elvis Costello I can do without...to me he's like bad indigestion....
I've read numerous of your postings and I'm flattered by your knowledge and interest...you give me great energy and I thank you for it...

Listening to Elton's live album 11-10-70 (?) I got a good feel for how good a player he was. He rocked the A&M studio with only a bass player and drummer. That is a great album. Love his early stuff.
