Subject: Oldies Concert

I read an AP dispatch about an oldies concert this past weekend somewhere in Florida (maybe Orlando) to benefit Vietnam Veterans Groups. One of the bands listed was The Guess Who. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it Jim Kale's group?

I think it's pretty safe to say at this time that that was Kale's group, since tour dates haven't been finalized for the original band. It will probably be confusing for most people to tell the differance, but you'll probably hear a lot of radio promos advertising the "original group" and probably mentioning Randy and Burton.(anyway, that's what I would look for) We can't evan be sure that the original group will tour the US at this point.

There was an article in the Winnipeg Free Press this morning claiming that the original GW are going to play a 20 date Canadian tour in May and June, starting with a small club date in Winnipeg and ending with another Winnipeg date in a large venue. And another source says they are booked to play Edmonton on May 31. Of course, the article says it's all still tentative.

The 28th of June in Calgary you say eh? Well the Edmonton date may have changed then, there was a question mark there. Let me know if you hear anything Tales. This is so exciting.

Now the Edmonton Sun says June 20th for Edmonton, but like everyone else, we will find out for sure next week.

Guess Who's coming to town

By MIKE ROSS, EDMONTON SUN
We'll never tire of this joke - Guess Who's coming to town?

No, it's not the Who, nor is it Yes. It's just the seminal Canadian rock 'n' roll supergroup the Guess Who, recently re-formed and ready to tour again in The Winnipeg veterans are planning a jaunt across Canada this summer. It will hit all the major Canadian cities, including Edmonton. This was confirmed by tour manager Marty Kramer, although he wouldn't go into specifics.

Expect the band to play Skyreach Centre or a similarly sized venue on June 20. The tour will begin and end in Winnipeg, with a kickoff club date in mid-May, winding up on June 30. The band will then headline a classic rock festival in Craven, Sask., on July 15.

Winnipeg is, of course, the home of the Guess Who and the so-called "wheatfield soul" sound. The Guess Who created hits that include These Eyes, Undun and American Woman. All the original members reunited last August during the closing ceremonies of the Pan-Am Games in Winnipeg. It was the first time they had performed together since 1983.

The official announcement for the tour is expected next week.

Yes, it was Kale's group - I went to see it; the entire listing was:
JOHN KAY & STEPPENWOLF
ANIMALS II
THE GUESS WHO
ANIMALS II
THE RASCALS
THE BOX TOPS
IRON BUTTERFLY
MITCH RIDER & DETROIT WHEELS
LOVIN' SPOONFUL
THE DOVELL'S
BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS
They were 2nd to last, and limited to about 50 minutes. The sound system was not good, the lighting was poor, and many of the concert-goers were drunken vets who had started at noon when the affair opened. I wanted to talk to Garry about the upcoming reunion but they (uncharacteristically) booked as soon as their part was over.
