Subject: Star Baby myth

The story that DJs didn't like "Star Baby" because of the cold start is a bunch of hooey! Following is a list of hits that had no intro:

Somebody To Love (Jefferson Airplane)
Hey Jude (The Beatles)
Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys)
Hound Dog (Elvis Presley)
Renegade (Styx)
The Pied Piper (Chrispian St. Peter)
The Unknown Soldier (The Doors)
Lovers Who Wander (Dion and the Belmonts)
Runaround Sue (Dion and the Belmonts)
We Can Work It Out (The Beatles)
Rock and Roll Music (The Beach Boys)
I Got Stung (Elvis Presley)
When Will I Be Loved (Linda Ronstadt)

The truth is that American DJs weren't taking the band seriously by this time. But once the song received a groundswell of support, radios were forced to play it (it sold in various markets as the songs popularity grew and waned). That's why even though it peaked at only #39, it stayed on the charts longer than any other GW 45. But the relative "success" of "Star Baby" definitely helped the sales of its follow-up, "Clap For The Wolfman."

Well, Counsilor Jefferson Q:
That's quite the assemblege of star witnesses (although "Unknown Soldier" didn't exactly burn up the charts-personal favorite?) to support your case. I went with that "no intro" rationale having read it in Creem.
Either way, I can't imagine "Star Baby" beginning any differently.

t's true that djs like long intros so they can talk over the insrumental part. But I think crappy airplay was the major factor in the GW's (and later, Burton's) poor showing in the US hit charts. Heartbroken Bopper was played in Rochester for ONE week, then never heard again. Star Baby was played regularly, Glamour Boy ever heard. (so were Albert/Broken) here. I'm Scared, My Own Way To Rock were never played in Rochester. (but a Rochester dj told me I'm Scared was being played in Ithaca at the time)
