Subject: Guess Who CATALOG re-issues !!!

All,
A few months ago, I managed to lose possession of my beloved Guess Who CDs (long story!). While I still have Artificial Paradise, The Way They Were, and Flavours on vinyl, I am NOT about to spring for the collection once again. And why not? Well, to be quite honest, I wasn't too bloody impressed with the sound quality of the CDs anyhow. I can't think of another "superband" collection in the whole of the record industry with a shoddier, cheaper, more bare-bones quality to it. I mean, have you listened to the AMERICAN WOMAN album in its entirety and then popped in a Queen CD reissue? The difference is like night and day. I was, however, very very happy to hear the great improvement in sound with the recent Guess Who greatest hits CD (released in the last 6 months or so). I was overjoyed, in fact. This, coupled with the Cummings reissues, which may I say are very well done sound-wise, has convinced me to wait. Why should I stuff more money into the pockets of these fat, bloated pigs at RCA, re-stock my rack with the Guess Who CDs, when they haven't shown the slightest concern for my listening pleasure by producing quality sound? Answer: I shouldn't and I WON'T!!! I might be insane but I am going to wait for Guess Who reissues (pray God they'll come before I get old and grey), something a little more 21st century. I mean, come on! Would it kill these RCA pigs to digitally remaster the catalog? I recently heard about the BEATLES catalog and how it's being digitally remastered (again!) by Sir George Martin and his merry band of sound wizards. While I realize the Guess Who are NOT the Beatles, I asked myself: "Why not? Why not just a simple remastering of the Guess Who's work? In a boxed set or something?" Something for the fans, for f*ck's sake!!! Imagine, if you will: "You may saaaaaay I'm a dreamer ... but I'm not the only one ... I hope somedaaaaay they'll reward us ... and the Guess Who catalog will be re-done. ................................. Species Hawk

How can you live this way? You mean you can't listen to "Down & Out Woman", or "Talisman" whenever you get the urge?
I like how you broke into song, reminds me of a Barney Miller episode where they brought in a guy who acted as though life was one big musical.
I have to agree that TGW CD's haven't been produced too well, sound- or packagewise, but after listening to records that sound like they were eaten off of with steak knives, I can deal with it.

Funny you should mention that, some of the GW CDs were mastered from VINYL sources. Unbelievable!

You are not the only one waiting remastered CD-reissues of
GW albums. I still have most of them only on vinyl and sure
I'd like to get them on CD, but remastered with bonus-tracks
and with booklets that have good liner-notes (hopefully by
JE) and some rare pictures. Maybe BMG (RCA whatever) is
going to release them if/when reunion happens.

There are some discussions happening.

Yes they seem to have had a lot of snakes hissing in the
background when they were recording. Would love to see a 10 disc remastered holiday box set come out this fall and it would put some chump change in the boys' pockets.

I think Share the Land could really benefit from remastering. The sound seems to be a little masked.

Funny how you mentioned SHARE THE LAND! I got TWO versions on cd...the import Canadian version & a REMASTERED US version I picked up used. It was done March 1994. Any difference? You bet! The US version has better bass, clearer highs, more open. I use these two cd's as demos to show people that not all cds sound the same!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks the BMG American Woman CD sounds like Burton is being muffled by the music.
