Subject: My favorite Midnight Special

Hi everyone

This is a long winded recollection, I hope it is not too self indulgent.

I want to tap your collective knowledge and recollections about the Guess Who and Burton Cummings appearances on the Midnight Special.

I remember the night sometime in the mid to late 70's. I was about 16 or 17 sitting around the farm house, bored as usual on a Friday night (or was it Saturday). There was really nothing to do except watch TV. The Midnight Special was coming on. I usually hated the crap they had on there, and this night looked to be the same. Here was some guy sitting at a Piano, not too promising. Then he sang Stand Tall, I think. "Oh the Stand Tall guy", I thought, "he's pretty good". Then I think Randy Bachman or BTO played a couple of songs. This nights show was not too bad at all. I remember being impressed with the Stand Tall guy. He also seemed super articulate and intelligent. I think he did Clap for the Wolfman?. I addition to being a good singer, wow he was also great speaker. Then, if I can remember back 20+ years, I seem remember the show coming back from a commercial and the BTO guy starts playing the guitar part for American Woman, I thought "what the hell is this, why is he playing this tune?". Then the Piano Guy grabs a Tambourine and runs up to the mike and just wails on the song. My jaw dropped. I was just Friggin amazed. That night I learned Burton Cummings name.

I am wondering if any of you folks know when that was, and what other apperances Burton had on the show. Also do you know if the show is in re-runs anywhere, I would love to see that show again.

Thanks

That show was played in the summer of '78. Burton was hosting the Midnight Special during the DREAM OF A CHILD tour. Randy had just released his SURVIVOR album, on which Burton played keyboards and sang backup. SO the Midnight Special was a reunion of sorts, in that Burton and Randy performed together. The show is available as a bootleg, but the Midnight Specials have not been repackaged for public consumption. VH1 reran a few of the shows a couple of years back, but not that one. They did replay the one from 1974 in which the band first played "Clap For The Wolfman." The band appeared several times on Midnight Special, hosting at least once. They also appeared several times on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert and In Concert. The shows are ardently sought after by GW fans since they truly captured the band at their best.

Those were great shows, the GW hosted MS several times if memory serves and of course performed Clap WITH The Wolfman when that was a hit.

I remember making sure I had a babysitting job whenever the GW were going to be on MN SP or IN Concert just so I could make sure I could stay up late enough to watch it. (still looking for that IN Concert where they did Show Biz Shoes.)

Nice thing about not being 15 is I can stay up as long as I want to !

Really? I find myself going to bed by 10:30 whether I want to or not. In college I could stay up as late as I wanted to. Age has its drawbacks.

This particular MS show was the one my mother and I went to the taping, as guests of Burton. He was host, and it was really fun. Wolfman Jack appeared on that show too, and Wolfman got a big kick out of my silver-haired mom in the audience. Before the taping began, Burton told Wolfman that that silver-haired lady was his 66 year old groupie. Fond memories. Another guest on that show was Teddy Pendergrass.

I found this site today and was looking over the past coupla weeks worth of messages and saw this one about the GW Midnight Special appearances. I recall seeing them perform (now I'm going from memory on this one) "Dirty" and "Eye". I was fully into the GW at this time (my fandom started in 1974) so I made a point of taping this performance (fair quality). It was called the Midnight "International" Special that particular evening and the GW represented Canada of course. Also appearing were Golden Earring and PFM (who were also on the tape I made).

My Dearest American Woman,
I've been keeping the home fires burning in Cleveland. I don't get a whole lot of time to poke around on the Internet and when I do it's spending money on eBay! Just recently bought a very cool Dean Martin picture sleeve. As you probably know I play the Guess Who every week on my radio show and for my birthday as a treat to myself I play 2 full hours of GW stuff you hardly ever (even never) hear on the radio. It's my own little personal crusade. Take care.

My kind of station. Tell me, how do you get your boss/program directer to let you play more than These Eyes Laughing and Undun?

We're a non-commercial college station and we can play whatever the hell we want to. As long as it's FCC clean between the hours of 6am and 10pm. It's a great station and has been broadcasting for 30 years. This year we expect to raise our wattage from 1,000 to 15,000 watts! We also broadcast on the Internet at http://radio.cwru.edu. So I take full advantage of the music flexibilty and close out my Rock & Pop show (Tuesdays 5-7am est) with the Guess Who. And I make it a point not to play anything off of Best Of Vol 1 and rarely anything off Vol 2 either. It's a blast!
