Subject: Journey to The Guess Who

While reading through AMG - The American Music Guide's article on The Guess Who, there is a mention of other groups who cite TGW as a musical influence. The group Journey, who I've always thought were excellent, ranks The Guess Who at the top of their list. And in listening to Steve Perry, their lead singer, you can hear -- albeit in a higher range, a mighty powerful Burtonian influence coming out. Pretty good alternative music choice when I have to give my GW/BC CD's a rest. Opinions? Or any other singers/groups you know of who have clearly been studying our boys?

Yeah, but this just in... I checked out Steve Perry's website, and he's called "The Voice" over there. Excuse me, but them just might be fightin' words. Maybe "The Voice, Jr." I'm kidding, but I thought that was kinda interesting. Two excellent voices, similar in style, sure would make a nice duet...

Interesting comparison. Steve Perry has a terrific voice. He's another one who had a limited solo career after being in a highly successful group.

Me too! I really like Steve Perry's voice. A couple other groups I really like were Toto, and Little River Band.

I once heard an interview in which Robert Plant, lead singer of Led Zeppelin, said he wanted his vocals to be a cross between Janis Joplin and Burton Cummings! I do like Led Zep. Also Queen, Beatles, The Kinks, Little Feat, Zappa, Joe Jackson (great piano player) and countless others. I've got close to 2,000 albums, tapes and CDs in my collection so I do listen to a very wide range of music. But I must say that BC/GW gets the lion's share of my listening time. Queen probably ranks second.

I did not and I could not,
Never could be Freddie Mercury...

I was thinking of that quote from Plant earlier today -- where did it appear? He's also quoted as saying BC has the best voice in rock 'n roll. I'd love to read the entire interview if it was published somewhere. BTW, Queen ranks way up there with me too.

I don't know when or where Plant made that quote. I heard it in a radio interview 20-odd years ago.

Frank Zappa? How refreshing that someone would mention the most underrated musical genius in rock. Although eclectic and eccentric, anyone who ignores the talent of the Mothers of Invention is missing out on something.

Want a great alternative? How about Spirit- one of the best bands ever out of LA and in many way similar to the GW. Both bands were never afraid to experiment and stretch the limits of pop music.

SPIRIT! Alright, now you're talking. 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus is one of my alltime favorite albums. The fuzz tone of Randy California was similar to that of Bachman's on songs like NoTime & Proper Stranger. They also liked to have the guitar solos travel across your headphones as do Bachman's. Stereo panning..a lost art. "When I Touch You" is a mindblowing song.
As for Journey, I like the songs better than the voice which sounds to me like Hard Rock's answer to Michael Bolten. Sorry! That's great to have somebody mention BC as an influence but he really didn't learn too many Burtonesque vocal moves in my book.

Yes they did that. You probably also have heard "Nature's Way" and possibly "Mr Skin" (killer sax--very funky, high energy song), both from the SARDONICUS LP. Two members split off to become Jo Jo Gunn whose big hit was "Run, Run, Run". I have one their LP's--the cover has the four bandmembers in bed with a 250 lp in the buff lady flying through the air towards them as they wait in eager anticapation. Was that too much information?

Yes! Thunder Island did-ot-for-me the same way "Come on By" did, when I was 15!~ Incidentally, Steve Perry is my second favorite (to B.C ) and I have all his piano music. too....but Steve Perry was a 'above average" piano musician, compared to B.C.'s genius.....

Best of Spirit has I Got A Line On You, 1984 and 5 of the 12 dreams among other goodies. One of those bands you tend to forget. And both the Jay Ferguson and Jo Jo Gunne singles were quite excellent take-offs on the Spirit sound.

I'm with you on the Journey notion. I did however always enjoy the effortless delivery of Steve Perry and am set back a step or two every time I hear "wheel in the sky".
"Mr. Skin" is a nasty little bit of pop culture and "the animal zoo" is someplace we all need to visit!
To carry a bit of everyone else's conversation into this one, Robert Plant is one of rocks best "screamers", Daltrey get the tears out from "behind blue eyes" and the Stones have a real bad boy thing about them.
But the Beatles are at the top of it all!

Well hello there, Mr. Kelly's Husband. Can't argue with the Beatles' assertion, since I had 10 of their LP's & just 45's of everyone else (even TGW until AmerWom).
Another good Spirit song which was released as a single (but stiffed) was "1984".."...knocking at your door/will you let it come/will you let it run your life!"

Jay Ferguson of Spirit/Jo Jo Gunne and solo outings and Burton had a number of interesting parallels and differences. Both were tremendously talented writers keybordists and tenor vocalists. Ferguson had tremendous underground radio support with Spirit but had trouble cracking into the upper echelons of pop music. Cummings was a pop music master who craved legitimacy in the FM music scene. Both of them also had lackluster movie stints. Ferguson in the Model Shoppe and Cummings in Melanie. Ferguson has had a very active career scoring movies and TV show since the mid 1980's. Always wanted to hear a "Night of the Pianos" featuring these two. Why should those guitar players have all the fun? Bruce W. aka Jo Jo Fanne

some that I know have a GW influence- Tragically Hip- they said they heard alot of GW from their older siblings. Larry Gowan- he opened for Burton in St Kitt's last year and made no bones that Burton was his idol. Gowan got up on stage with Burton and it was kinda cute to see them. Burton would be talking and Gowan would start playing a BC song like Sour Suite. Burton would put his hands on his hips and pretend to be put out. (cute!we all laughed hysterically!)Gowan also did a version of These Eyes on one of his albums
Cpolin Arther- plays with the Randy Bachman band- said to sound an awful lot like Burton
Eddie VanHalen is said to be a big Randy fan

It's online Hockeytown. I'll see if I can find the guide somewhere. It's where I found all those other artists that did Burton/Guess Who songs way back when.

Go to www.allmusic.com and search for your favorite artist. As far as the influenced by TGW, you'll find that on TGW page under followers. Another interesting thing to do is look up Burton Cummings and scroll down to the section of other artists' on which he's collaborated. You'll find some where he's done the keyboards or background vocals.

Just remember, the AllMusic Guide isn't completely accurate, so take what they say with some doubt if it sounds suspicious. For instance, they list Ian Thomas as a drummer and I have been assured that of all the things he is, a drummer isn't one of them.
