Subject: Top 10

Hey guys/gals. Certainly, I can understand people having a problem with the Guns 'N' Roses selection. Certainly. To be quite honest, I was in a rush (at work) and had to throw on two groups onto the Top 10. Hence, GNR & Genesis. ..... As for underrated bands, well, I'd go like this: (1) Spice Girls (2) Aerosmith (3) Eagles (4) Wings (5) Doors. ...... first off, let me say: Spice Girls = crap .......... and the Doors? Yes indeed, the bloody Doors. I would have them in the Top 20, but NOT in the Top 5 that some people would have them. Talk about overhype. I know Cummings always dug Morrison (and seems to have secretly wanted to BE Morrison) but I must go off the well-worn path and label the Doors "overblown." A band built around the good looks of Mr. Morrison, who, apart from his deftness as a poet, had little musical ability. Eagles? Boring! Predictable! Apart from "Lyin' Eyes," which is surely one of the prettiest ballad-types in popular music history, the Eagles were, like the Doors, given far more due than is deserved. And Aerosmith? Gimme a break! Ever listen to "Crazy" and "Cryin'" one after the other? Like listening to the same song. Aerosmith is one of the most unimaginative bands that ever made it to the top. Boring! Back to the Guess Who: as I said before, the issue in making this band a Top 5 or even a Top 10 is EGO. I'm sorry I drafted my Top 10 list of a few days ago because, although the GW are my favourite band of all time, I don't necessarily think they should be in the Top 10, if longevity and cohesion are factors in the judging. Cummings and Bachman. That was the problem. Ego. Just for a lark, anyone have any opinions on (1) Run DMC (2) Culture Club (3) Elvis Costello & The Attractions (4) Boston (5) Backstreet Boys (6)Beach Boys ........ I think the Beach Boys might be the forgotten band in this whole discussion. What do you all think? .......... Species Hawk

Beach Boys produced a lot of good music over the years;
over-shadowed by Beatles and weren't "cool" with the
record buying public of the day...probably is the forgotten
band. Great live act!
Boston- couple of albums and sold zillions, not enough
longevity to be top 10...music seems dated, today?
Culture Club- more noted for non-musical pursuits. Almost
a cartoon; nostalgia is great! (Few good tunes, but not
super-stars).
Sometimes hard to separate "good" bands from "favourite"
bands...

Top 10 favorite groups? Lets face it, this can only be opinion. There are just so many arguments to be made... Anyway, this would be mine: 1. Guess Who; 2. Steely Dan; 3. Bruce Hornsby & The Range; 4. Emerson Lake & Palmer; 5. Peter Gabriel; 6. Rolling Stones; 7. Beatles; 8. Tragically Hip; 9. Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass; 10. Led Zeppelin. I don't know, this list could change from day to day...

Peter Gabriel, a group? I love the man, don't mistake it, but even with his recent weight gain, I wouldn't classify him as a group. One of my favorites, most definitely.

I agree with including solo artists (although I would tie BC into the same legacy with TGW). My Favorite 10:
Guess Who?
Beatles/John & Paul solos
Steely Dan/Fagen solos
Robert Palmer
10CC/Godley & Creme/Wax UK
Badfinger
Squeeze
John Cougar Mellencamp
Smithereens
Dave Edmunds/Rockpile
Spirit/Jo Jo Gunn

Wow, a Smithereens fan! Do you have their version of "Shakin' All Over"?

John Mellencamp--all right!
So, how about a groups only list and then a group/single list. I say this because most of the time, when a group member goes off to do single work, it is definitely different from what was produced by the group.

E.C. & the Attractions would be in my top 5, definitely! Would've liked to seen them earlier, but they finally came to town promoting Imperial Bedroom around '82. KICKED ASS! That was the most involved I've ever seen an audience. Haven't always liked some of his work without the Attractions, but the guy is a terrific songwriter and the Attractions very talented.

Somehow got nerve enough to use the name "Elvis"....

Totally disagree. Elvis is a phenomenal writer with some awesome material. Pump it Up and Radio are incredible songs. Elvis P. is not a deity.

Underrated band #6. The 5 Man Electrical Band. Great players. Good music. To bad they didn't produce enough material to be considered in any ones poll.

Lists and all kinds of top 10's are the spice of life (anybody here read Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity, great book). Anyway here's my top 10 of bands (not in any order):
Guess Who
Grateful Dead
Doors
Beach Boys
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Quicksilver Messenger Service
Spirit
Moby Grape
BTO
Byrds
