Dire Straits? I like them but maybe the top 100 would be more appropriate. I never cared much for the Kinks. Although I'm not a fan, the Velvet Underground have been very influential from a pure aesthetic viewpoint. Personally my favorites are mostly individuals as opposed to bands.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned The Doors. They're definitely top ten. Dire Straits would be about #29, tops. The Dans of Steely deserve high accolades & honoUr (I'll let ya'll know if the new CD's any good). Begrudgingly would I give the Beach Boys top ten, gotta give Brian Wilson, Pet Sounds, Good Vibs their due, even if they ripped off Chuck Berry's Sweet Little 16 to make Surfin' USA. I was going to argue that Cream didn't belong because they didn't stay together that long, but when I think of all their songs that have become staples of Classic Rock stations, they seem like viable candidates. The Airplane had Somebody To Love, White Rabbit, & Lather. Volenteers of America is pretty nauseating.

Suppose I'd blow my credibility to put Badfinger in there?

nevermind.

Writer's credit for Surfin' USA has always been given to Chuck Berry

Thanks for straightening me out on that. Glad I didn't totally trash the boys.
