Subject: Computer Questions

Being this board's resident techno-moron, I was wondering if anyone could help me with a little difficulty I've encountered. The CD-ROM drive on my girlfriend's computer is no longer functioning. (I'm sure it is a hardware problem .... the blasted thing is just plain screwed-up). I have a suspicion that it would be cheaper to just by a new one and install it myself. The question is, how easy would it be to do this? Do I just take out the old one and hook up the new one where it was, or is there some complicated procedure involved in this?

The other thing I've been wondering about is the feasability of upgrading my processor and RAM myself. (I've seen some things for this in stores) Does anyone know how complicated this is?

I don't mind paying for a professional to do something when it's necessary, but I come from a family of do-it-yourselfers, and after seeing what some stores charge for doing this kind of work, I have to wonder. On the other hand, I don't want to screw up two perfectly good computers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
