Subject: For Deep Eyes Only... (Aaron's Review)
In reply to: Achilles 's message, "Guess who saw the FFmovie? :-D" on 20:35:42 07/11/01 Wed

First word out of my mouth when I saw this post?

"Bastard." ^_^

Now here's where I say "Go see the movie. You're going to anyway, so who am I to try and stop you?" (Oh and "Hey Square, Ben Affleck called. He wants his face back.")

From here out, stop reading if you haven't seen the film or you care about potential spoiler material. Tashi, this means you!

Spoiler - Spoiler - Spoiler - Spoiler

Okay? Everyone gone who doesn't want to read this? Good.

While driving my car on the 35 minute trip home from the theater, I made the stunning realization that my roommates and I were not discussing the characters. We were not discussing the story. No, we were discussing the look of the film and that was it. This, my friends, struck me as incredibly wrong.

IMHO, the Final Fantasy games I've played have always been about the characters and their struggles. This movie, however, was about the graphics and not about content. I found myself not caring about almost any of the characters (I liked Steve Buscemi's "Neil"... but only after they got his voice synced up properly). Instead, I found myself awed by the look of the film: the movement of Aki's hair; the motion of the flames; the fluidity of the liquids. 45 minutes in, I realized that the awe of the graphics had distracted me from the rest of the film's parts. 5 seconds later, I realized that the rest of those parts were too weak to really notice.

While my overall opinion of the film was negative, I do have to admit I liked some of it. Donald Sutherland (not playing an evil guy? what's up with that?) was great as Dr. Sid. Steve Buscemi had some great lines. And wow, there was a cool "Spiderman" teaser trailer before the pic.

Other than that? The plot was a complete rehash of FF7 (should have just called the alien rock Jenova) with some lines ripped off from "The Abyss" ("...said this was a one way trip..."). I couldn't bring myself to care about the evil plotting of General Seifer (yah, he's called Hein, but I swear it was just Seifer with darker hair and no scar). I kept wondering why Goliath from the "Gargoyles" animated series was the voice of one of the counsel members. Roz from "Frasier" got to throw in a couple of curses. And hey, Aki got knocked up by the alien infesting her and thus could save the planet. Who knew tentacle sex with a dead alien could be so world-altering? Wait. I thought this wasn't a hentai flick...

My final verdict? I'll give Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within a 9 for graphic innovation and a 4-5 for everything else. Think that averages out to about a 6 out of 10.

See the movie. Gape at the majesty of the images. Just don't go expecting too much else.
