Actually, I would not be surpised if chaff grenades already existed. Military aircraft already use chaff charges to foil guided missiles. All we would be talking about here is minaturizing the same thing.

As for Metal Gear itself, it is hard to say how far off something like that could be, but I suspect that most of the tech used to build it is not as far-fetched as many people might think. After all, it is not some outlandish humanoid anime-style mecha --- it's essentially a walking tank / mobile missle platform. If the top minds in the field really worked on such a project, and had a hell of a lot of funds, they could make something like Rex within the next decade or so, in my opinion. However, while it makes a great thing for a video game and looks really cool, there would be questions about the practicality of such a war machine. It might not be worth the costs.

Both the rail gun and the combat laser are both inevitable developments. Scientists are already working with rail gun technology, and while (to my knowledge) no one has been able to make a practical combat laser yet (due to the truly enormous power usage), they eventually will find a way. Already they are using lasers as target designaters and to blind people in combat.

The optic camouflage is really far-fetched, I agree. However, there may be another way to acheive the same kind of effect as the stealth suits and mines in MGS without having to bend light around the object. I read something in a Shadowrun book that is not all that far-fetched sounding. I will have to look it up though.
