I agree Olivia and Lauren did nothing, they should have been hosting the pageant NOT a Phila girl and Betty's daughter! As far as the winners apparently the judges are tone deaf and because Ashlyn can not sing! This is what you are sending to Miss A? I have no Idea what is seen in her. As far as Sarah she is a pageant patty fake and tuck up. Krystle does have a great talent but Danielle also had a strong talent, so for me it was a tie! They did do a good job of picking the OT but thats it! I do not like that they include the Teens with the Miss awards. It should be Miss Awards and teen awards separate. Personally I think it was more a Cape May County Pageant.
MAO YOU NEED TO GET RID OF THE RANKINGS! Rankings Suck!! why bother scoring, just pick the girl you like because thats they way all the pageant winners are picked, its not by the best girl its who the judges like/who the director wants!
TOO MUCH FILLER is an understatement!

With that said, I find it hilarious that some people would make SOMETHING out of NOTHING because they are threatned. Would you rather she stay on the stage, push her way into Richard's pictures and hang out on stage for no reason? I don't know how many supporters she had there that night, but it was very clear from the cheering & appluas that she had more than just a few. Mayvbe, just maybe she GENUINELY felt she should quickly change and go thank those supporters? Only someone who is worried about her and watching her would make a comment that she left the stage, so

Cara McCollum '14, the first Princeton student crowned Miss New Jersey since 1999, poses with the judges, including Hilary Levey Friedman *09, third from right. (Photo: Richard Krauss Photography)
By Hilary Levey Friedman *09

For the first time in more than a decade, a Princeton student will compete for the title of Miss America. Cara McCollum, a rising senior and PAW On the Campus columnist, was crowned Miss New Jersey on June 15 in Ocean City. (In 1999, two Princetonians won state pageants — New Jersey’s Victoria Paige ’01 and Iowa’s Jennifer Caudle ’99.) The next stop for McCollum is Atlantic City, where she will vie for the Miss America crown on Sept. 15.

Princeton students frequently distinguish themselves inside and outside the classroom, but it’s rare to see them wearing crowns. (In contrast, Harvard has sent 10 undergraduates to the Miss America stage.) However, the relationship between Ivies and Miss America isn’t as strange as you might think. The Miss America Organization is the largest provider of scholarship money to women in the world — this year approximately $45 million will be awarded.

When she was crowned on Saturday night McCollum not only won a crown, but also $11,000 to apply to her Princeton education or graduate education. In a few months she’ll try to win another $50,000 at Miss America.

It was not always this way. When Miss America started in 1920 as a bathing beauty contest, it was a gimmick to extend the tourist season on the Jersey Shore. But things began to change around World War II; in 1938 the talent portion was added and in 1945 the first scholarship was awarded. The addition of another crucial component known as the “platform,” or a community service issue which the contestant promotes throughout her reign, came along in 1989.

McCollum’s talent is piano (despite only being able to use nine fingers due to a rare tumor in one finger), and her platform issue is about promoting youth literacy — she’ll develop the Birthday Book Program in New Jersey, which she started in her native Arkansas. In the calculus to help determine Miss New Jersey only 15 percent of the score is attributed to swimsuit, 35 percent to talent, 25 percent to interview and platform, and 25 percent to modeling in evening gown.

How do I know so much about Cara McCollum and pageants? I actually served as one of six judges who helped select her as Miss New Jersey. As an academic (with a Ph.D. in sociology) who more commonly interviews Princeton admission hopefuls, it’s a different experience to judge a beauty pageant. However, I have seen firsthand how young people benefit from learning to articulate their opinions and aspirations in front of strangers. It is a great pleasure to get to know young people like McCollum who are bright, well-spoken, and motivated to make a difference in their communities.

What are other's thoughts on girls forfeiting their title in order to compete in the same triple pageant? For those who don't know what I am talking about, if a girl wins a title in a triple pageant she now can forfeit her title in order to compete in that triple again and win one of the other two crowns. Only one of three girls will be giving up their title at the first shore pageant. I personally think this is greedy, especially since it is the first pageant of the year. Takes chances away from other girls who may want to hold a title for that group of pageants. To me it just seems greedy, give someone else a chance.

Congrats to Cara. She is beautiful, and I think she will do great at Miss America. Kristy Pawlus needs to stop, however. Her head looks 1,000 pounds, enough. Hopefully, Brenna Weick will be our Miss New Jersey next year. I love her, and that girl is flawless! It's a shame, because Kaitlyn Schoeffel could be Miss New Jersey, but she needs to tone it down a lot with the pageant patty stuff. Courtney Fairfield looked stunning, this just wasn't her year. Needs to push harder. Cierra is awesome, but I think she should put on a few more pounds. Anyone else agree? GOOD LUCK to Angelica Nardi. It's a shame she's such a bitch, because she would probably have won NJ if the judges didn't see right through her. Still hands down beautiful. I'd say our state has amazing girls, we are very lucky. It seems like a lot of them do not know what they are capable of doing. #TEAMNEWJERSEY

Isn't there a rule about not competing in the next season's locals until you pass on your title? Saw an email to the Shore contestants about helping at the princess pageant and there are some ladies on the list who won't have passed on their title by the Shore pageant. An I missing a rule somewhere that allows this?

Was anyone else surprised at the top ten? I thought for sure Courtney would be in there. And was surprised that Krysten didn't make it since she won swimsuit and her talent was better this year then the past, the same thing with Carissa (won evening wear) and she has improved her talent greatly.

Our NJ girls are great, we had so many awesome talents, Nichole Washington was fabulous! A crowd favorite! Anna, Kaitlyn, Olivia ,Brenna, Ciera, Ayla, Courtney C and Venessa! Stunning gowns on Lauren F. Myra McCann, Carissa Courtney C, Nichole W., Venessa and Ciera. Swimsuit ready bodies too many to mention!! As a group they were in excellent shape! Carissa looked awesome, as did Nichole and Olivia. Opening number Andi just blew me away. There were many accomplished, beautiful young ladies on that stage. Parents and supporters should be proud of every one of them. And while Cara may not be from NJ originally, she is a Princeton girl now! I might also add that I will PROUDLY go support Angelica Nardi in 2 weeks at Miss Delaware and hope she wins along with our other girls who go/or have gone to school in other states and compete there, Jachelle, Katie B, Chelsea Lee, Geetchen, Shirley Fisher. Love you all!

Nicole was clearly robbed for talent. Vanessa clearly has a tattoo on her ribs covered in a bad application of make-up. Anna clearly lost her SS body credit from a couple years ago. There is too many girls walking up there without any confidence, some of the new girls I understand, however Courtney H- really? And Fairfield's gown is directly from the 1980's and not nearly as stunning as some of the others. Here's what I liked: The Production! Amazing, such a turn-around, the pace - excellent! My front-runners: Nicole, Schoeffel, Lindsey (it's all about confidence and the hunger ladies) nothing Bias here- there are few that came for that crown!
