[> Subject: The Sweetheart Pageant is held each year at the beginning of Sept at the Sweet Corn Festival in Illinois. Each state may have their 1st Runner Up participate in the pageant. If the 1st cant attend, they may go down the list of other r'ups. It is a just for fun pageant. Not every state will send a contestant. It is a nice way to recognize those contestants who came oh so close to winning. The contestants form friendships and get the experience of competing on a national level.
