ABBA Minutes, May 5, 2002

The May 5, 2002 ABBA Meeting was called to order at 9:00 PM EDT.

The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as posted.

Old Business:

- Where do we stand with bill boards and flyers?

- If you are showing, please do a meet the breed. You can set it up with your crates or whatever.

- Miami/Dade Petition - Maureen asked, anyone have any ideas on how to light a fire under the Amstaff people and get them to at least sign the petition? The link was posted to the AST Network board, amongst others, there were no responses. It is embarrassing when other people care more about our breeds than they do. Ava wrote to someone she met that has bull terriers and she was going to have her club sign it.

- BSL Updates and State Reports -

Miami/Dade -

- Diane Albers has been trying to get in touch with Maureen. She is President of the Florida Federation of Dog Clubs. The ASPCA lawyer is on this. Maureen has been communicating with her and they are making an action plan.

- Dade County is not confiscating and killing. They are giving people ample time to turn the dogs in or get them out of Dade. Maureen sent ASPCA some of the posts off the board and told the lawyer to get in touch with ADOA.

- If anyone from Florida sees anyhting about this in the newspapers, please e-mail me so I can forward it to ASPCA.

- Jennifer, Florida - Is printing out positive reports on the breed. Who should she send this stuff too? She is planning to use them for PR. Maureen asked that they be to her. The reports may be something she can use for ASPCA. Jenn asked that articles be sent to her via email. RHKennels@aol.com

- Sheri's ex is in Miami. She will call him and see what he can tell her. He's a journalist but for the Navy.

-Darren - Broward County, FL - I must apologize this is a cause I am willing to do anything for, but I am having some personal issues with myself and my own residence because of my dogs. My home number is 954 946 4033. I gathered some stats, but right now is a bad time for me. I appreciate all the concern and I will be back to normal shortly.

- Vallisca, IO -

Dorothy reports nothing new, but Villisca City Council meeting is a week from this Monday.

-Orange County, NC -

The dogs and owner have left. He stole the dogs from the shelter. His dogs got loose again
and attacked another dog. The owner was up to go to trial May 20th. He was in prison before for attempted murder.

- Virginia -

The 260 bill passed. There is a fee for rescue people and shelters. $100.00 for the rescue and $50.00 for a foster home. You are allowed six a year, then you have to be inspected.

- Ohio -

The Task Force came up with recommendations to send to the OH state legislature.

New Business:

- Bully Breeds by "Dog Fancy" -

- Jane saw some positive articles on page 52 of the latest Bully Breeds by "Dog Fancy" magazine. There is a good article about an am staff that was left for dead in an abandon refrigerator. The police found him in a trash bag left for dead. His nose sniffing lead police to 3,075 lbs. of cocaine hidden in a pineapple truck. Another story ... The dog was the only one to hear Ann Matthews collapse to the bathroom floor after a life
threatening allergic reaction to a spider bite. The AST got her husband to come to Ann's rescue because she couldn't yell for help herself. Another story, APBT saves family from fire. Her email address is hunter03@starpower.net . Please let her know if you need to borrow the magazine, if for some reason, you can't find it. There are pit bull hero articles throughout the magazine.

- Sue Sternberg -

-Lora got information from the Siberian Husky people. All the information is being sent to Linda Fuoco of the Pittsburgh Gazette. She is getting a lot of leads on her. Linda is trying to get in touch with the people who wrote that expose. It was from some folks that had worked for her. Lora got some email addresses for her today. There have been others who have gone to her seminars and have been appalled. Lora stated ... Basically, Sue set herself up and did a ton of self-promotion to convince every shelter in the US that she's the most knowledgeable temperament tester in the country. So she's making a fortune off of this, and doesn't want any dogs messing up her evaluations. They have to act the way she says they will act, and she has to put them down right away to cover any inconsistencies. She's located in NY.

- Miami/Dade Petition -

-Peggy suggested attending the AKC show in June would be a great opportunity for doing Public Education and getting petitions signed by Dade residents. The show is in Miami. Kerri stated no AST's turn out there. She went last year, nd there was only 3 registered. Peggy stated it doesn't matter if no AST are there.

Brags and Announcements:

- Chickee was congratulated on the reopening of the BBB.

Dorothy - Magic, my amstaff baby girl, got her first points last weekend ... 2 points total.

Pepper - My boy got BOB yesterday at Bucyrus in OH.

Lora - Junior got a couple more points this weekend.

Peggy - I have been invited to judge Jr Showmanship at the Niagara Falls KC match in June.
- We have a week night ABBA meeting anytime someone needs to discuss something. Just let me know and I will open a room and invite everyone in.
- KC of Buffalo decided to cancel the CCG/TDI testing at their June match, after I had
everything set up and didn't even tell me. Becky Iannone, from my area was going to do the
testing at the KC Buffalo match. The club said the board thought that they would be stealing from other clubs that give the test.

Jane - She is in the new membership process at Mattaponi KC.

Jim - I got a 90 on my sports read! And I'm learning to master a sound board. I have mid terms AND a double entertainment read this week.

Brandi - Prissy made it all the way around today without falling on the "mats".

Maureen - I am teaching a conformation class starting 5/15 in Fredericksburg.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:12 PM EDT.
