ABBA Minutes, February 10, 2002

The meeting was called to order at 9 PM EST.

The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as posted.

Old Business:

Log in - It was agreed from this meeting forth, all participants will log in with their first name and state. This will remove the confusion regarding the identification of participants.

ABBA Auction - Jaime's quilt has drawn a lot of interest. Ruth suggested we should post the link to the auction site on the ABBA website. The auction will last until the end of the month. More items need to be offered at auction and more advertising of it is needed.

ABBA Newsletter - Maureen will get back to working on this now that Baltimore has been settled.

Taking Command Newsletter on the AKC website -
www.akc.org/love/dip/legislat/taking_command.cfm
There is a long list of communities and states attempting to introduce BSL in the Taking Command Newsletter...Please read it.

BSL Updates:

PPA - This bill is going for a vote this week. Everyone must contact their state senators by
phone, email or fax. An update from Sharon Coleman appears on the ABBA Board.

Maryland - Baltimore: BSL was defeated. A bill was approved with no BSL references.
State: People are needed for a demonstration on February 19, 2002 at 1:00 PM. Send e-mails and faxes to state legislators. Support no BSL in MD. Adrienne Lefkowitz posted relevant information to the boards. When the bill is passed Maureen would like to send a certificate from ABBA.

Milwaukee, WI - Emily will be in touch with Pam of the WI Dog Federation and will report her findings. Alderman Murphy is willing to reintroduce a repeal effort if we can convince the other Aldermen to support it.

Philadelphia, PA - Adrienne Lefokowitz believes that BSL will not pass here because the state law will not be changed. Jaime has been in touch with the new governor and the city's dog warden. She quoted the following statement, "The general assembly has the power to make and change laws. Express your concerns to your state rep and senator."

Bellevue, NE - Dorothy checked the Bellevue, NE City Council agenda and there was nothing on it about the pit bull ordinance.

New Business:

AKC has announced that Melanie Tierney has received Community Achievement Award for her work in OH over the past 10 years.

Jobs for participants -

Ongoing....ABBA Auction, Milwaukee, Bellevue
Broadening the contacts with other breeds not so closely associated with BSL currently.
Contributions for BSL Newsletter should go to Maureen.
PPA - a priority is to write to your state senator and get it emailed tonight.
