Boy recovering from dog attack

By: Norb Franz, Macomb Daily Staff Writer February 01, 2002

Nate Sharp, 6, accompanied by his mother, Lori, has undergone two operations to remove damaged tissue after two pit bulls attacked him. Staff photo by Craig Gaffield.

'The pup pulled him to the fence,' mother of 6-year-old boy says.
Doctors this week removed damaged muscle and tissue from a 6-year-old Warren boy's leg after he was attacked by two dogs in a neighbor's yard.

The surgery Wednesday was the second operation on Nate Sharp's left leg since being bitten by two pit bulls. One bite narrowly missed an artery.

"A general surgeon said it was the worst dog bite he has ever seen," said Lori Sharp, the boy's mother.

The dogs - named Zeke and Chyna - were seized by Warren police and quarantined. Zeke, a 9-month-old puppy born to Chyna, is expected to be destroyed.

Nate was playing with "Buddy," a Pekinese belonging to next-door neighbors Geraldine and William Dodge on Marigold Avenue after school a week ago.

Zeke apparently crawled under a fence from another yard and onto the Dodges' property.

Lori Sharp said the young pit bull dragged her son, a first-grader at Kennedy Elementary School, toward the fence.

"The older dog pulled his shoes and socks right off his feet," she said by phone from her son's room at Children's Hospital in Detroit.

Bleeding severely, Nate nearly lost consciousness. He suffered severe tissue damage from his ankle to his knee.

"I guess they were going to have lunch," said Joyce Price, stunned by the ferociousness of the animals toward her grandson.

Esther Martinez said she heard a commotion and was horrified by the incident.

"I grabbed (Nate) and took him out front and took Zeke to the laundry room," said Martinez, whose son, Daniel, owns the pit bulls. He was unavailable for comment.

"He doesn't want anything to do with them anymore," Mrs. Martinez said.

She said Zeke - and possibly Chyna - will be put to sleep. She said both dogs are vaccinated for rabies.

The attack left blood "all over our driveway and on the garage door," recalled Mrs. Dodge, who said the pit bulls got into her yard about two weeks ago and injured her dog.

Lori Sharp was furious after learning two days after the attack that the pit bulls had not been removed by Warren police from the Martinez home. She phoned police, demanding answers.

"It's not safe for a neighborhood to have animals like that in it," she said.

Animal control Officer Tim Herrig said the dogs were taken to the Macomb County Animal Shelter and quarantined.

"The owner has requested the younger one be euthanized. He wants the older one back," said Sue Jeroue, Macomb County chief animal control officer.

Doctors continue to watch Nate's wound for signs of infections. He still faces upcoming skin grafts.

Sharp said her son has had a few difficult moments dealing with the attack, but mostly is in good spirits thanks to support from family.

"He's a little toughie," she said.
