Before we get confused let's get accurate clarification and definition.

SOLA SCRIPTURA - Is the Latin for Scripture alone.
Martin Luther held firmly in his refirmation and inquisition by the Church of Rome that SCRIPTURE was his final and undeniable authority. A.D. 1517

This was asserted in the face of SOLA ECCLESIA in which the Catholic Church held that its Papal and Illuminated holy counsel(which included all "church TRADITIONS" held the same authority as the Word of God. Leaving its interpretation and doctrinal premise to the whim of the counsel.

So I will respectfully disagree with the previous warning to beware of those asserting SOLA SCRIPTURA. I am guessing that there was a confusion in a clear understanding of what SOLA SCRIPTURA means.

There are many ancillary and "historical" writing which give a broader understanding of a Biblical truth.

For example the Aprocrypha while giving a sense of the time and culture in many ways, is not cannonized or (recognised scripture as divinely inspired)39 Old Testament Books and the 27 New Testament Books.

With that said:

I would suggest that Sola Scriptura is a good premise to start at. Jesus didn't say, to the devil in the wilderness
"According to our tradition. He said "It is written".

A great book is called "How to read the bible for all its worth. It is a basic on Exegesis. (What was the original meaning of what the writers were saying) It then goes into Hermenuetics (What does or how does that apply to me today as a believer)

II Timothy 2:15 says
Study to show thyself approved unto God a workman that needs not be ashamed "rightly dividing" the word of Truth.

#1. Is it in the Word
a. Who was the author speaking to.
b. What is the original (exegetical) meaning i.e. Greek/Hebrew

#2. Look at the verse in light of the "whole thought". Paragraphs were not in the original text, however they help to set in place the whole or predominant thought, so one is not "Cherry Picking"Scripture out of context.

#3. Look at it in relation to the book (Epistles, Psalms, etc)
For Example. In proverbs it talks about heaping coals on someones head as a blessing. Without understanding the context, the tradition of that time and the translation of what that particular orientalism meant, Some one could grab the scripture out of context and start the BBQ your neighbor for the Lord cult.

#4. The Lord promises that the Holy Spirit will lead us in all truth. A simple but powerful truth is that
a. The Lord is "not" schyzophrantic He will never contradict His Word.

Stay in a multitude of wise counsel and under a Pastoral mentor and headship. That would be Steve in the UCMI. That way we're not winging out on some wild Pizza revelation that is off the Word.

These are just a "few" of the tools to stay on the Word, Stay in Fellowship, and walking in truth.

God bless you
Rev. Mark McManus
